If Christopher Nolan were to select a single movie from the extensive Bond saga, it would be On Her Majesty’s Secret Service. This movie stands as his personal favorite to date. He revealed this detail to the Empire by stating

“I think, On Her Majesty’s Secret Service would be my favourite Bond. It’s a hell of a movie, it holds up very well. What I liked about it that we’ve tried to emulate in this film is there’s a tremendous balance of action, scale, and romanticism and tragedy and emotion. Of all the Bond films, it’s by far the most emotional.”

Nolan claims the movie to be a complete package, an absolute entertainer. It contains all the ingredients a movie buff would yearn for and more. He asserts that even in this day and age, unlike many others, this movie holds up exceptionally well.

This Is How a Bond Film Inspired Christopher Nolan to Make The Dark Knight Rises!

Another iconic Bond film titled, The Spy Who Loved Me directed by Lewis Gilbert was special for Nolan in more than one way. The director watched the film during the early stages of his career and subsequently drew inspiration from it for The Dark Knight Rises. Essentially, this movie represented one of the director’s initial forays into expansive and daring cinematic scopes, that made him further fall in love with a camera and filmmaking. In a Q&A event named An Evening with Christopher Nolan, (via IndieWire) he revealed,

“The globe trotting elements of “Batman Begins” mostly came from the Bond films. One of the first films I remember seeing was “The Spy Who Loved Me” and at a certain point the Bond films fixed in my head as a great example of scope and scale in large scale images. That idea of getting you to other places, of getting you along for a ride if you can believe in it — in “The Spy Who Loved Me” the Lotus Esprit turns into a submarine and its totally convincing, and it works and you go “Wow that’s incredible.””

He continued,

“In “The Dark Knight Rises” we had to do a flying vehicle for Batman, which is very daunting, but that’s the challenge. It’s trying to take the audience for that ride, and that was sort of my job cinematically. “

This movie encouraged the director to embrace more bravery and boldness within his artistic vision and will forever remain one of his most treasured picks from the Bond saga.
