With the ever-expanding Marvel Cinematic Universe at our dispense, the audience barely has to wait before the studio juggernaut spawns a project leading on to the next Phase or the next big event. With 2025 fast approaching, the big event is set to be Avengers 5 – which, due to the faults of the parties involved, is now about to happen with or without Jonathan Majors’s Kang the Conqueror.

Initially titled Avengers: The Kang Dynasty, the film’s basic premise exhibited huge potential due to the central protagonist – the time-traveling, super-powered, multiple-variant Kang whose only purpose was dominating space and time itself. While that premise is no longer valid or feasible, the studio has turned to other IPs within its existing catalog – and we may finally know who it is.

Avengers 5 is a Go – But Not Without a Few Hitches First

With the studio’s primary choice, Jonathan Majors as Kang the Conqueror, clearly out of the picture, Marvel has no time on its hands to concoct a 5-year-plan for how best to tie off the post-Endgame era universe. As such, desperation among the upper ranks has filtered down into the audience as fans have begun to pitch theories and possible plotlines to neatly tie up Phases Four, Five, and Six.

After Avengers: Endgame, the fifth team-up will hold value for not only setting up the next batch of Earth’s Mightiest Heroes but also for establishing the primary threat against the universe. With the Multiverse being an integral building block of the formulating plans, the MCU need not look much further into the future to find an answer to its current problem.

Spider-Man: No Way Home and Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness – two of the biggest fanfares of the MCU Phase Four roster were involved with the Multiverse from the outset and both involved Doctor Strange at the heart of its plot. The sheer unprecedented scale of the plots was in no way any less than an Avengers-level movie. And now, apparently, Marvel Studios has caught on to the same idea as well.

While promoting his upcoming Netflix psychological thriller Eric, Marvel veteran and Endgame actor Benedict Cumberbatch dropped a major Avengers 5 easter egg that may already have snipers scaling rooftops surrounding his home. In a career introspective interview with Still Watching Netflix, the actor revealed about his role as Doctor Strange:

Well, I’ll be really honest about it. The joy of playing him is immense but also the joy of playing him means I can help create and platform stories and writing and less commercial fare into being. So he’s a gift in many, many ways in my life – as a producer, as an actor. I love playing him. He’s great fun… I’m very much looking forward to adventures next year. It’s cooking up a storm.

MCU’s Phase Five roster is halfway done. With 3 more films and 5 more series to go, the world wants to move on to Marvel’s next chapter within the coming year. Fantastic Four, which premieres on July 25, 2025, is already set to launch Phase Six of the cinematic universe, and with it, set into motion the world-ending hype for Avengers 5 and Avengers: Secret Wars.
