While some stated that a sequel was unnecessary, a few others were unsure if people would still be interested in the franchise after thirteen whole years.

Well, looks like all the doubts have been erased from their minds as not only is Avatar: The Way of Water doing insanely good during its run at the box office, but it is also going to beat another much-loved movie pretty soon. That’s right, Marvel Cinematic Universe’s Spider-Man: No Way Home is about to be dethroned on the all-time charts as Avatar: The Way of Water is on its way to the rare two-billion dollar club!

Spider-Man: No Way Home was probably the most exciting movie to be released after Avengers: Endgame. With cameos from the previous two Spider-Men and a bunch of old villains, the movie was bound to do well at the box office and it did not disappoint. The film is currently sitting at the sixth spot on the list with $1.916 billion.

However, MCU needs to watch their back as the residents of Pandora are right behind them, waiting for the perfect moment to take the spot for themselves. Despite having doubts, Avatar: The Way of Water has successfully reached a whopping number of $1.901 billion. As you can see, the numbers aren’t far away from each other at all.

Looking at the way things are going, The Way of Water will soon be able to kick No Way Home out of the sixth spot and send it to the seventh. According to an update, it shouldn’t take the sequel more than two days to reach the required mark. People who love James Cameron’s work are thrilled to hear the news and took to Twitter to share their happiness. While there were a lot of comparisons between the two movies and people obviously picked their sides, The Way of Water emerged victorious in this debate – at least in terms of box-office performance.

If The Way of Water’s fate has the movie reaching the $2 billion mark, then there might be a chance that Avengers: Infinity War ($2.04 billion), Star Wars: Episode VII – The Force Awakens ($2.06 billion), and Titanic ($2.1 billion) need to watch their backs, as well.

The sequel had the eleventh-biggest worldwide opening of all time with $441.7 million. The film is the fourth to reach the $1 billion mark post-pandemic after No Way Home, Top Gun: Maverick, and Jurassic World Dominion.

During the Official Digital Pre-Show for Golden Globes, Cameron had a word with Variety where he talked about his film’s success. However, the filmmaker didn’t want to talk numbers and was more interested in the fact that people are actually stepping out of their homes to watch the film in theatres, having had enough of streaming.

“I’m not thinking of it in those terms. I’m thinking of it in the terms of we’re going back to theatres around the world. They’re even going back to theatres in China where they’re having a big COVID surge. We’re saying as a society, ‘We need this! We need to go to theatres. Enough with the streaming already! I’m tired of sitting on my a**.’”

Cameron also talked about the people who prefer texting during a film saying that they were “missing the point” and that going to watch a movie is all about committing yourself to it for the hours.

At least, Cameron did not have to worry about people going to theatres to watch The Way of Water. Come it rain, hail, or snow (literally), people were seen sitting on the theatre chairs with a bucket of popcorn in their hands, waiting for the blue-skinned Na’vi.
