Darth Vader stands head and shoulders above some of popular culture’s most well-known antagonists. Instantly recognizable by film and comic book enthusiasts, the character has few equals in wider Hollywood, and definitely none in his own franchise.

However, it seems that fans have decided that there is one character who can stand up to Vader, but Dave Filoni is not convinced that that is the case. Speaking with Vanity Fair, Filoni revealed why he found it to be so funny that fans thought Darth Vader’s orders were defied by Boba Fett.

Speaking with Vanity Fair, Dave Filoni pointed out how it was so hilarious for him that some people thought Boba Fett was defying Vader at any point in the original trilogy. He said:

It’s funny when you say he stands up to Darth Vader. Does he do
that? I think he was hired and Vader tells him, ‘No disintegrations,’ and he’s like, ‘…Okay,’

Dave Filoni is clear in pointing out that Vader is in no way being rebelled against or even stood up to by Boba Fett. Instead, as was the case multiple times, Fett was just succinct and to the point in his communication. However, there has been an interesting theory that has been floating around as to why Vader seemed to prefer Boba Fett as a mercenary, calling on him multiple times to apprehend Luke and the Rebels.

Darth Vader would hire Boba Fett because it would remind him of Captain Rex

Captain Rex was one of Anakin Skywalker’s closest confidants, the commander of his armies, and one of the few people who knew about his relationship with Padmé. Anakin trusted the clone trooper to such an extent that he even used his helmet to communicate with Padmé when he was deployed to the front.

However, come his fall to the dark side, the Empire phased out the clone troopers from its service. Further, most clone troopers, given their accelerated aging, would become old or perish, removing any justification for Vader to keep them around.

However, given that a small part of Anakin Skywalker still survived in Darth Vader, the Sith Lord could have hire Boba Fett again and again as the bounty hunter would have reminded him of the Clones under his command, especially Captain Rex.
