HBO just dropped two trailers for the second season of House of the Dragon, and the world has been obsessing over it ever since. Releasing two trailers with two different sides of the Dance of the Dragons, the marketing strategy is quite brilliant. But we are not here to talk about marketing strategy.
During the trailers of the blacks (Queen Rhaenyra’s side), we see a brief glimpse of The Wall and, quite possibly, Lord Cregan Stark. Being the Lord of Winterfell, Stark has quite an interesting story to tell, and showrunner Ryan Condal is quite excited for the world to meet Cregan Stark!
Ryan Condal Is Excited For The World To Meet Cregan Stark In the House of the Dragon!
People might remember that during the end of season 1 of the HBO show, Rhaenyra laid a claim to the throne and sent her sons and allies across Westeros to gather support and armies to her name. Well, Jacaerys Velaryon, the firstborn son of Rhaenyra, travels to Winterfell and the North for help.
The trailer for the second season shows Velaryon meeting Cregan Stark on The Wall as the duo walks together. Well, the people who have read the book know why Cregan Stark is so important. House of the Dragon showrunner Ryan Condal revealed in a recent statement (via X) that he’s very excited to see how Stark carries himself in the world of Westeros!
“He’s very powerful. Everybody’s vying for his army. He’s quite a bit younger than Ned Stark was, so it’s interesting to see how he carries himself in the world, and the burden that’s on his shoulders being the Warden of the North.”
Although the character is yet to be introduced, George R.R. Martin’s iconic novel Fire and Blood narrates in great detail the struggles of Lord Cregan Stark and how he was a man of his word and, overall, a badass character.
Lord Cregan Stark Is One of The Best Characters In Fire and Blood
*Major Spoilers For House of the Dragon and Fire and Blood*
Just to clarify, Fire and Blood is the novel by George R.R. Martin describes the Targaryen dynasty from its rise to its eventual downfall. HBO’s House of the Dragons is an adaptation of the same novel.
Talking about Lord Cregan Stark, the Wolf of the North had quite an important role to play in the Dance of the Dragons. As per the novel, Stark forms a deep friendship with Jacaerys Velaryon because he is reminded of his late younger brother. Although there are several different accounts, the conclusion of their meeting was that Stark pledged his support to Velaryno and Queen Rhaenyra’s cause.
After the death of Prince Jacaerys and Queen Rhaenyra, Cregan Stark remains a man of his word and marches on King’s Landing with an army of 10,000 Northmen behind his back! Eventually defeating everyone, he reaches King’s Landing where Aegon II had been poisoned. Cregan Stark became the Hand of the King to Aegon III for a while and then turned back to Winterfell when the coronation was just a week away.
And this is just his part in the Dance of the Dragons, if HBO decided to show a hint of Cregan Stark’s personal life and his mind, the character would simply be a fan-favorite in the world of House of the Dragon. Season 2 of the HBO show is set for a release date of 16 June 2024 and will be available to stream on Max in the U.S.
