Ahead of the launch of Mortal Kombat 1 for PC and consoles, Derek Kirtzic discussed how they approached bringing new elements to the gameplay as well as characters. When asked about the process behind the bloodied fatalities in the game, Kirtzic said that they are very fun to come up with and it is all possible with the amazing team they have. In an interview with CBR, Kirtzic stated,

“First, we find out what the roster is. We have to make sure because– it’s a new timeline in this game, we have to figure out what the character personalities are in this one. Are they more cocky? Are they more brutal? What kind of character are they? Obviously, what weapons do they have? That all starts to build the equation of how to create it. Then it’s just the pure insanity of the team.”

Kirtzic said that before they go all out to just design fatalities they need to know the timeline of the game, a character’s personality, do they wield weapons, and after they have the basics in order, it’s just the brilliant team that gets the job done.

Derek Kirtzic on the new Universe, new Approach to Characters and Kameo Fighters

Kirtzic stated that starting new allows them to try new things and bring new things to the characters that were not in the previous games. He said that a new timeline allows them to bring in new abilities and implement them as things aren’t exactly confirmed and they could not give new abilities to the characters before as it wasn’t fitting to the story and timeline.

Mortal Kombat 1 will bring Kameo fighters

Alongside a new story and features, the game is also bringing Kameo fighters including the classic version of Scorpion, Sub-Zero, Motaro, and more. Players would be able to get these fighters as they level up and experience more gruesome action in the game. Here’s what Derek Kirtzic said to CBR about Kameo fighters,

“I think “chaos” is the perfect way to describe it. You use them to compliment however you want to play. If you want to be more of an aerial juggler, you equip Sonia. She’s going to extend those combos. If you want to be a hard-pressure character, you could potentially equip Jax. He’s doing ground pounds to give you more control. They really complement the way that you want to play.”

Kirtzic said that these Kameo fighters will complement gamers’ playing styles. The Kameo fighters will also have abilities. He added that their combat designs are brilliant as they know the technical aspects of fighting games very well and they ensure that everyone blends in even with new features and gameplay.
