Tom Cruise’s Stunt Risked Losing Footage For the Train Crash Scene

Tom Cruise once again pushes the boundaries for action sequences in the seventh installment of the action franchise Mission Impossible. One of the scenes of the film involves a train falling off a cliff, and the director of the movie, Christopher McQuarrie, spared no effort to stage the climactic train crash.

To bring the whole sequence to life, an actual train was constructed. Given they had only one train, they had only one opportunity to capture the scene as well. And the director was determined to cover it from every possible angle. He planned to do that by attaching six Z Cam running cameras to the train that was set to dive off a cliff into muddy waters.

It was a tricky situation, not knowing if it would work or if they would be able to recover the footage. “It’s kind of terrifying knowing that there is no rehearsal,” McQuarrie shared his thoughts in his commentary track featured on the film’s home release, as per Slashfilm.

He added, “There’s no way to predict whether or not the cameras on the train would survive.” The crash eventually took place without an issue, and they were able to retain the footage, which also turned out to be pretty great.

However, Paramount Pictures has delayed its release by nearly an entire year to May 23, 2025, as per Variety. Reports suggest that the production of the eighth installment in the action-packed franchise has seen a halt due to the ongoing SAG-AFTRA strike. The movie is also expected to get a new name, as the studio has decided not to use “Dead Reckoning Part Two” as the second half of its title.

Mission: Impossible – Dead Reckoning Part One is available on Prime Video.
