Emily Blunt’s Biggest Nightmare Was to Host Saturday Night Live

During Saturday Night Live hosting, Emily Blunt nearly vomited on the live show because of anxiety. She was promoting her movie, The Girl on the Train (in 2016), shortly after she had given birth to her daughter – Violet. It was when she hosted the U.S. comedy show alongside musical guest Bruno Mars on October 15, 2016.

Even after over three years, Blunt shuddered thinking about her anxious and sleepless nights during her Saturday Night Live hosting gig. She told The Guardian:

“I’ve never been more scared in my life. I get anxiety just thinking about it. The whole week was such a whirlwind because Violet was nine weeks old so I just wasn’t sleeping.”

She also revealed that there was a vomit bucket just off-stage, which she feared she’d have to use. The Sicario star added: “I mean, I didn’t puke in it, but it’s there. It was just this completely alternate reality.” The actress recalled how the backstage staff helped her go through with the hosting gig. As she explained:

“This amazing woman who has looked after the talent going in there to host it for years just wrestled me around the sets and stripped my clothes off. I mean tearing the clothes off me. I remember her standing by that door and they’re like: ‘Live from New York!’ and she’s rubbing my back very firmly and I’m moving with it, and she goes: ‘You’re OK, you’re all right, you’re OK, breathe, you’re OK, OK, you’re up.’ Honestly, it’s like a nightmare. The thought of it now, it makes me sweat.”

Blunt is quite a softie. She also once confessed that she’s a positive and energetic person, although she’s also overly sensitive and usually gets “very nervous” sometimes. When she was a newcomer, she faced anxiety issues while working with industry giants like Tom Hanks and Meryl Streep.

Emily Blunt once revealed feeling uncomfortable while filming an intimate scene with Tom Hanks in their movie Charlie Wilson’s War. In an interview with the GQ, the actress discussed her love scene with Hanks’ character in the film.

Although his character had a passionate personality, she felt a little uneasy because the age gap between them was so much. She said, “Tom Hanks? Hot! It was surreal! And embarrassing, always, because it’s just you with your t*ts hanging out, and you have to hope that the lighting’s nice.” She added that it could be weird for him, too (with her being around his daughter’s age).

In addition to that, in an interview for Actors on Actors with Brian Cox for Variety Magazine, Blunt explained that it was a bit scary to work with Meryl Streep, too. “She’s amazing and she was a bit terrifying in that movie. But it made her very miserable to play Miranda,” the (now) 40-year-old told the magazine.
