Shatner is pointing his phasers at Takei and accusing him of a 60-year smear campaign. He revealed about past disagreements and called Takei a glory hog who loved the spotlight. In an interview with The Guardian (via Far Out Magazine), the 93-year-old spilled the beans:
Except for one, who was a prima donna…but the rest of us shared a great camaraderie. One of the gifts from Star Trek was not just longevity but colleagues that became lasting friends.
These on-set tensions have warped into a decades-old feud, and Shatner’s clearly had enough. He accused Takei of blackening his name for publicity, calling the whole thing sick. Takei, and possibly other former co-stars, are still bitter about the feud, using it to stay relevant, as Shatner claimed (per The Times):
Sixty years after some incident, they are still on that track. Don’t you think that’s a little weird? It’s like a sickness. George has never stopped blackening my name. These people are bitter and embittered. I have run out of patience with them. Why give credence to people consumed by envy and hate?
Takei, ever the diplomat (on screen, at least! ), isn’t returning fire. He suggested that Shatner might also be using the feud for his own gain. It’s a classic media face-off, with both actors seemingly stuck in a loop of accusations. Thank goodness for all Trekkies, Star Trek has left a much bigger impact than this off-screen drama.
There’s no denying that the show had an effect on sci-fi and pop culture. But this latest fight between Shatner and Takei shows that even the most famous teams can have problems with getting along with each other. Live long and prosper… but maybe not by watching yourself on screen? That seems to be the motto of Star Trek legend William Shatner, who just dropped a warp core-sized bombshell!
It turns out, the 93-year-old actor, who boldly went where no man (or woman) had gone before as Captain Kirk, has barely set eyes on his own iconic work! Shatner revealed in an interview with Entertainment Tonight:
I’m gonna tell you something that nobody knows. I’ve never seen another ‘Star Trek’ and I’ve seen as few ‘Star Treks’ of the show I was on, I’ve seen as few as possible, I don’t like to look at myself, and I’ve never seen any other. I love it, I think it’s great. I just don’t, you know, I don’t watch television, per se.
The actor claimed a dislike for watching himself and said that he prefers documentaries and sports over revisiting the sci-fi saga that launched his career. While a frozen Captain Kirk might be pure sci-fi fantasy, one thing’s for sure: Shatner’s legacy as the original Captain Kirk is secure. Even if he himself hasn’t beamed in to see it all that often.
