Roman Reigns has been on sabbatical from the WWE after his loss at WrestleMania XL. The Tribal Chief lost his Universal Champion title against Cody Rhodes, thus giving the American Nightmare a chance to finish his story. While fans wait for his return, Reigns seems to have more feuds to finish in the ring.

While he gears up to battle the Final Boss, his cousin The Rock, he also seems to have an ongoing feud with John Cena. The actor and wrestler also made an appearance at this year’s WrestleMania. Reigns has constantly been in a war of words against the Peacemaker star and he even roasted him in the ring after his comeback in 2021.

WWE is all about feuds and storylines and there have been plenty of iconic instances where the wrestlers have engaged in a war of words in the ring. Promoting an upcoming fight, the two stars usually engage in a session of trash-talk to instigate the other. That is exactly what John Cena did to Roman Reigns during a contract signing event on RAW in 2017.

Cena confronted Reigns ahead of their match at No Mercy as the former became a free agent. The actor hurled plenty of insults at the Tribal Chief before challenging him to sign the contract as Reigns was reluctant to do so. Reigns was nowhere near the brute force champion he is now back then.

However, Reigns took his revenge on John Cena when the latter returned in 2021. The Tribal Chief commented on Cena’s age-old tricks and speech and even put forth a crass comparison. He said,

He came out here, the same music, the same entrance, the same run to the ring, the same outfit, the same promo, the same insults. If I wanted that, all I had to do was search online for 2005 John Cena — it’s the same thing, over and over and over. It’s like missionary position every single night.

The promo was done ahead of their SummerSlam match in 2021, which Reigns won. The ‘missionary position’ line was reportedly removed from the YouTube release of the episode (via WrestleTalk).

John Cena and Roman Reigns have faced each other eleven times in the ring, with Reigns winning every time. However, Cena has won every promo with his carefully crafted insults that hurt the Tribal Chief and even made him fumble his retort. The legendary promo for No Mercy, 2017 saw Cena reach his peak against Reigns in a war of words.

The Fast X star was accused of being a part-timer and yes-man by Reigns but got bullied by Cena in a response that will go down in the annals of WWE history. He said,

You stand there and blame me. Fine. I blame you. I’m still here because you can’t do your job. When it comes to this yard, you probably haven’t learned it yet. There’s only one rule, step up or step aside…you should be ashamed I’m a part-timer because I can do this part-time better than you could ever do it full-time.

The mic-drop moment led Reigns to sign the contract for the No Mercy match of that year and the episode became a legendary moment for the two superstars.
