As the previous year wrapped up, fans got to see who dominated the music scene, and it seems like The Weeknd still managed to retain the top spot as pop superstar Taylor Swift fell behind. Spotify is currently the most widely-used streaming app for songs, with over 100 million tracks, 5 million podcasts, and 350,000 audiobooks.
Swifties might get a shock after knowing their favorite icon did not secure the number one spot even after the release of Taylor’s Version hits. Last year, she rerecorded her Speak Now and 1989 albums with immense success.
The Weeknd Tops Spotify’s Most Streamed Artist
As per a tweet by The Pop Tingz, The Weeknd (real name Abel Tesfaye) ruled Spotify with over 111 million monthly listeners on the music streaming app. Meanwhile, Taylor Swift amassed over 110 million monthly listeners. Still, not a bad feat after she became the first and only female artist to cross the 100 million mark.

For months, the Tennessee-bred artist dominated the music app and was even crowned with Top Global Artist of 2023. From January to November, her Cruel Summer power song earned more than 26 billion plays. This triumph is largely because of her The Eras tour and the rerecording of her albums.
On the other hand, The Weeknd seems to have been quiet for a while and has not released any new music, perhaps due to the controversial leaking of the unreleased song Trust Issues. Nonetheless, fans are still streaming his music on Spotify, earning him the title of the number one most streamed artist on the platform.

Despite Taylor Swift only securing the second spot, the singer is still due for more concert tours and perhaps a potential new album in the near future. Her latest albums are also dominating the Billboard charts so it’s still a huge win for her.
