When Selena Gomez Revealed She May Retire From Music

Selena Gomez briefly considered giving up on her music career in a significant 2021 interview with Vogue, but she ultimately decided against it. The 31-year-old singer and actress opened up about her purposeful three-year hiatus from the internet and social media and her honest thoughts about quitting music to concentrate entirely on acting:

“I woke up one morning and looked at Instagram, like every other person, and I was done. I was tired of reading horrible things. I was tired of seeing other people’s lives. After that decision, it was instant freedom. My life in front of me was my life, and I was present, and I could not have been more happy about it.”

During her appearance on the SmartLess podcast, the singer-actress talked about her decision to continue her acting career. She stated the following (via Deadline):

“I started having a lot of fun with music and then touring was really fun. But I was doing my TV show at the same time [Wizards of Waverly Place], and I just found it really fun so I just kept going but the older I get, the more I’m kind of like, I would like to find something to just settle on.”

Gomez went on to say that managing workload is part of it, sharing that “I went to a mental institute and canceled one of my tours” due to the pressures and amount of work that come with being a pop star.

“It just got to me because I love working, and it distracts me from bad things.”

Even if Gomez decides to give up performing tomorrow, her vast fortune would still be enough to buy an entire kingdom. As a result of her early success as a Disney Channel star and her lucrative music career, the Wizards of Waverly Place alum has amassed a fortune that most people can only imagine!

But how exactly has the We Don’t Talk Anymore hitmaker amassed such a gargantuan fortune? Her initial days as a young Disney Channel star set the stage for everything. She then launched a lucrative music career, selling out arenas all over the world and releasing hit after hit.

Gomez has pursued endeavors beyond music, such as acting, and fashion design, and even started her own beauty line, Rare Beauty. The latter was projected to be valued at $2 billion in 2024, according to The Business of Fashion.

Is she going to retire? In a recent interview with Rolling Stone, Gomez did, however, clarify that she does not actually plan to call it quits on her music career. For now, though, acting is her top priority.

“I think it’s natural for people to take breaks, but I think for me, there is a whole other aspect to my life, pride and joy. I love film. I love TV. I just feel like I haven’t done a lot of the things that I want to do in that space. It’s not that it’s ‘no, never’ [to music], it’s more that I would like to explore that world a bit more and have the time to actually do that.”

Even if she were to give up music tomorrow, her enormous wealth would more than support her for the rest of her life. So, rest assured, Gomez will continue to live the luxurious lifestyle she has become known for long after her music career is over.
