Benedict Cumberbatch has starred in some extremely iconic roles. Being one of the most critically acclaimed actors in Hollywood, his range is impeccable. From playing the role of Doctor Strange in the Marvel Cinematic Universe to Alan Turing in The Imitation Game, Satan in Good Omens, and even the Grinch in the animated 2018 film, it seems that there is nothing that he cannot do. While these roles have certainly helped him gain the respect that he has today, there is one role that made him as popular as he is today. That being, Sherlock Holmes.
The BBC classic has been referred to by many as one of the greatest television shows of all time, and this has not been used lightly. Considering how iconic and popular Sherlock became, it is only natural that fans wanted more despite its end with a fourth season. It was revealed by one of the creators of the series that there is one way that the series could make a comeback.
Sherlock Creators Hint On A Possible Season 5
A fact that is undeniable is that Sherlock was a beautifully done series. It had a famously impeccable cast, with actors like Benedict Cumberbatch, Martin Freeman, Andrew Scott, and Mark Gatiss. On top of this, it was exceptionally directed and beautifully written, having a conclusion that left fans in utter disbelief. With the kind of impression the series left on its fans, it is only natural that they want more.
“Mark [Gatiss] would do it tomorrow, Sue [Vertue, producer] would do it tomorrow – we’d all just do it again.” Moffat went on, “it’s never a completely shut door”
However, it would seem that the fans aren’t the only ones, as the creators as well as the producers of the series want to come back for a fifth season very passionately. During an interview with Radio Times Covers Party, via Devdiscourse, it was revealed by one of the creators, Steven Moffat, that everyone is willing to come back and do Sherlock once again. He went on, to state that Mark Gatiss, who played Mycroft Holmes, and Sue Vertue, a producer on the series, are on board for another season or a new story. There was, however, only one factor that was not allowing them to do so.
Sherlock Creators Beg Benedict Cumberbatch and Martin Freeman To Come Back
Steven Moffat talked about how Sherlock could go into production, extremely quickly, if Benedict Cumberbatch and Martin Freeman agreed to come back as Sherlock Holmes and John Watson. He mentioned that this is the only thing that is stopping the series from getting another season or a completely new arc.
“They’re on to bigger and better things but, Martin and Benedict, please come back?” said Steven Moffat.
During an interview with BBC, via Devdiscourse, he explained that he understands that both of these actors have moved on to bigger, better things. Both Freeman and Cumberbatch are a part of the MCU and have gained immense respect outside of this series. However, Moffat tried to persuade them to make this show a part of their lives again, if not for their own sake, then for the fans, who would give anything for more Sherlock Holmes. If these two stars were to agree to come back, the likelihood of a fifth season would increase tenfold.
