Back in 2008, Kate Hudson and Matthew McConaughey starred in Andy Tennant’s romantic action comedy, Fool’s Gold. The film follows the story of a divorced couple who find their way back to each other while in search of a lost treasure. While the critics weren’t a fan of the film, some viewers found it to be an entertaining watch.
A lot of the film takes place in the water which is how Matthew McConaughey came across a deadly jellyfish whose sting can put you in the hospital for days. Luckily, no one was harmed on set and they were able to successfully shoot Kate Hudson and Matthew McConaughey’s very last romantic comedy.

In an old interview, Matthew McConaughey and Kate Hudson were talking about their rom-com, Fool’s Gold, when they revealed how the Irukandji jellyfish almost terrorized the film set.
The actors had to spend a ton of time in the water to film their scenes but had to step away from it after McConaughey found the jellyfish in it. The Serenity actor stated,
They would shuttle us to another boat. Yeah, from boat to boat to boat… And then tanks. We were in the water pretty much 90% of the time. And we couldn’t be in the water for about two weeks because this wild jellyfish came through and ran everyone out of the water. The Irukandji.
McConaughey added that the Irukandji jellyfish are only the size of the nail on your pinky finger but that doesn’t mean they are harmless. Hudson stated that their sting holds the power to put you in the hospital on a morphine drip. She also added that while it’s not the sting that actually hurts, it’s the gruesome pain that comes afterward.
They literally put you in the hospital for three days on a morphine drip. Really, really bad. Yeah, and they’re these tiny, like, quarter of an inch jellyfish that are totally translucent. You can’t even see them, and they sting you. They say it’s not the sting that kills you, it’s the pain.
Well, at least McConaughey and Hudson have an absolutely unforgettable memory to remember their second and last rom-com by. The two actors previously starred in another romantic comedy, How to Lose a Guy in 10 Days, an all-time classic.
Matthew McConaughey and Kate Hudson Were “au naturale” On the Set of Fool’s Gold
According to an old but widespread rumor, Hudson forced McConaughey into wearing deodorant on the set of Fool’s Gold. As it turns out, the rumor is nothing but a big fat lie.
During a recent appearance on Watch What Happens Live with Andy Cohen, the Bride Wars actress addressed the rumors about McConaughey’s body odor after Andy Cohen asked, “Was that old urban legend true that you forced Matthew McConaughey to wear deodorant while filming Fool’s Gold?”
Hudson replied with a simple “no” before adding that neither her co-star nor she wore deodorant. She said, “No. He doesn’t wear deodorant — and by the way, I don’t either.” With a grin, she stated, “We’re au naturels, you know?”
Hudson went on to add that she could smell McConaughey “from a mile away” and that they “got so close” during the shoot.
Despite having been in the industry for a long time, neither of the two actors has lost their charm and continues to surprise their fans with one performance after the next. McConaughey recently voiced the role of Elvis Presley in the animated sitcom, Agent Elvis and also starred in Zach Bryan’s music video for his song, Nine Ball. He will soon be seen in films, The Rivals of Amziah King and The Lost Bus. The actor will also star in Archetype Entertainment’s upcoming video game adaptation, Exodus.
As for Hudson, her most recent film was 2023’s A Little White Lie, and will soon be seen in Shell, which is currently in post-production. She also plays the role of Isla Gordon in a television series, Running Point, which will be released in 2025. Best of all, Hudson released her first studio album this year, titled Glorious.
Clearly, the two actors have a strong grip on their careers!
