Ebb Software, the Serbian developer behind survivor horror game, Scorn, officially announced on June 29 that the title will be coming to PlayStation 5 by the end of 2023. This report was made through PlayStation Blog by Jovan Vučković, the technical artist for the company. When Scorn hit the market in October, 2022, it was a Microsoft Xbox exclusive and there were no hints it would be coming to any other console. However, now it appears the time is up for any exclusivity deal Microsoft had with Ebb Software, and Sony fans will get a chance to play this first-person bio punk epic.

In the announcement by Vučković, he talks about what PlayStation players can expect from the experience they are about to receive. He says:

“Many of you here may be new to Scorn, so for those less familiar with the game, you are about to experience a horrific adventure like no other. Trapped and stranded in a strange biomechanical world, you must make your way through a civilization in decay, now inhabited with twisted and grotesque creatures. While you will be able to wield various weapons in the game, Scorn is not a shooter, and each encounter can quickly turn deadly. Ammo and life are scarce, and your wits will often advise you to avoid direct confrontation.  Instead, to progress through this mesmerizing labyrinth, you will have to revive and activate abandoned contraptions, part machine, part flesh, all horror.”

The technical artist further discussed how the developers have tried to make the game as much like a nightmare as possible. Along with disgusting creatures and scarce resources, the environments have been intentionally designed to bring out an emotional response in the player. It appears, Scorn, will lean heavily into psychological horror, in the way it has been artistically designed, which is something several other AAA titles have tried to do recently.

Ebb Software has not only brought news of a PlayStation 5 release, but is also going to reimagine the game with specific console features in mind. Vučković explains that Scorn, will be experienced in a whole new way with the DuelShock controller’s adaptive triggers and haptic feedback. The main protagonist in the game never speaks and in fact, there is no spoken dialogue in the entirety of the story. The primary character mostly experiences the world of Scorn through his hands, so now, with the added controller features, the gamer will feel more closely connected to their playable character with their hands. Even the DuelShock’s light bar will play a role in the game, changing colors depending on the health of the player.

If you have not been keeping up with Scorn rumors and news, Ebb Software recently made headlines due to mysterious Twitter posts that indicated a PlayStation announcement was soon to come. The developer through its’ Twitter account, @scorn_game, gave fans a series of riddles to solve. The answers to these riddles were the symbols of the PlayStation controller: “X,” “Circle,” “Triangle,” and “Square.” As an example, the riddle for “triangle” said: “In shadows cast and darkness deep, A shape emerges from secrets to keep. Three edges meet, they intertwine, Within their grasp, sorrow does entwine.” These posts had PlayStation fans excited that another survival horror game, which has received moderate reviews, would be ready for a Sony debut.
