For years, Zack Snyder considered making a sequel to his breakthrough film, a remake of George A. Romero’s Dawn of the Dead. But following his packed schedule in the late-2000s and his commitment to the DCEU in the 2010s, a bigger and better sequel never came through.

However, following his departure from the DC universe, in 2021, Snyder was able to revisit the realm of zombies with Army of the Dead, a spiritual successor to the 2004 remake, thanks to Netflix. But unlike his first zombie release, Snyder assured fans that a sequel to the 2021 movie is on the cards, but it might take a while.

While hopes for a Henry Cavill-led Man of Steel 2 were killed off following Snyderverse‘s death,  the director has plans for AOTD 2, thanks to his ongoing cinematic universe on Netflix. After a decade of delivering polarizing features in the DCEU, the Zombie flick was a breath of fresh air from the filmmaker, which was lauded by fans as one of his best since 300. But although fans expected to revisit that world sooner, considering Zack Snyder is currently committed to the Rebel Moon universe, it might be a long wait before we get there.

But the BVS creator already has the written treatments for the sequel and title ready and even implied a possible crossover between AOTD and Rebel Moon.

He said (via Den of Geek):

“Army of the Dead 2 is not on the way right this second,” Snyder confirmed to Den of Geek. “Shay [Hatten] and I, we’ve written treatments, we know exactly what we would do. It’s really a scheduling thing at this point. We just have to press Netflix and be like, ‘Look, we need Army of the Dead 2.’ [It’s] Planet of the Dead, we know what it is. And you know, there’s a possible crossover between Rebel Moon and the Army of the Dead universes. They’re a shared universe.”

It’ll be interesting to see what the director has stored for the sequel to one of the better movies in his filmography, and how the worlds of Rebel Moon and AOTD collide in the future.

Zack Snyder Is Set to Revisit His Best Work to Date With Blood and Ashes

But AOTD isn’t the lone film in his filmography that will eventually get a sequel running, as last year,  Snyder regained the rights to Blood and Ashes, which was originally pitched as a 300 sequel.

Speaking to THR, the Watchmen director said:

“We got the rights back so we can make if we want it. I don’t know what the marketplace is for an incredibly homoerotic, super violent, super sexual movie. But maybe it’s perfect.”

Considering 300 remains Snyder’s best work to date, Blood and Ashes could arguably be the next big thing for Snyder if it retains the spirit of the original.
