The Dragon Ball franchise includes multiple series, the first being Dragon Ball. Even though Dragon Ball and Dragon Ball Z are different anime within the same franchise, Akira Toriyama created the manga as one. The manga had multiple arcs, and all were exciting, featuring the adventures of Son Goku from a kid to an adult.

Akira Toriyama is one of the best storytellers ever, and his art style is unmatched. However, there are several occasions when one of his arcs is better than the other. While most people believe the Buu Saga to be the worst arc in Toriyama’s career as a manga artist, several hardcore fans believe otherwise. During a discussion on Reddit, there were major differences in opinions.

Frieza Saga Is Better Than The Buu Saga

A question on Reddit was asked regarding the best art style in the Dragon Ball franchise. There were a variety of answers from different people. But most of them agreed that the Frieza Saga was the best in terms of art style. Akira Toriyama was at his peak during that arc. Fans often make hilarious remarks regarding the extended fight of Goku vs. Frieza, even though Namek only had five minutes before it exploded.

One of the best aspects of the arc was the dynamism during the action sequences. Toriyama beautifully portrayed all the angles of the fight with two-dimensional figures. The arc lasted some 87 chapters, which were enough to win over everyone’s hearts. When it comes to comparison, Buu Saga is the least liked saga from the art style point of view. Not only did Akira Toriyama’s art style dipped during this arc, but Toei’s Animation also failed to live up to the expectations.

Fans could identify the bland expressions on the Z Warriors’ faces, especially when Son Goku was educating Babidi and Buu about the Saiyan transformations. The 25th Tenka-Ichi Budokai is an example of the Buu Saga when Toriyama’s art style was called lazy for being too angular with the characters. Making the characters angular made the mangaka put less effort into their designs and facial expressions.

Reddit has held multiple panels where fans could freely share their opinions. Sometimes, people agree to it, and other times, it becomes the spark that later leads to heated arguments. However, when people showered their love on the Frieza Saga, most people agreed to it. There are only a handful of fans were thought the Buu Saga lived up to the hype. Several Reddit users commented on the matter and stood with Frieza.

The Dragon Ball franchise has gifted fans with several memorable moments. Even though the Buu Saga is infamous for its art style, it featured one of the best transformations in the franchise, the birth of Vegito and Gotenks, Mystic Gohan’s arrival, and the iconic Spirit Bomb. Late Akira Toriyama was also appreciated for Dragon Ball Super, which was a significant improvement from the last Dragon Ball Z arc.

After Akira Toriyama’s death, Dragon Ball Super manga went on a hiatus. Recently, Toyotarou announced that the manga will return soon. The fans were overjoyed to hear the announcement. Also, Dragon Ball DAIMA, which is Toriyama’s last work, will also premiere in October 2024.

Dragon Ball is currently available to watch on Crunchyroll.
