In 2021, Gege Akutami officially met Tite Kubo for the first time. The two mangaka met each other for an interview session. The latter was full of praise for Jujutsu Kaisen. One of the questions asked him to quote his favorite line from Gege Akutami’s magnum opus. While most people thought it to be some action-packed dialogue, it was the opposite.
Being a regular reader of Jujutsu Kaisen, Tite Kubo answered,
“If had to choose from the existing material, I’d say Junpei Yoshino’s “Don’t you think that whoever first said, ‘The opposite of love is not hate, it’s indifference’ must be rotting in hell?” It’s the quote that left the deepest impression on me.”
Tite Kubo mentioned since Jujutsu Kaisen was still ongoing, Gege Akutami had yet to give their best scenes, but out of all the present ones, he chose Junpei Yoshino’s dialogue. Being a fellow mangaka, Kubo understood the deeper meaning behind the quote. Junpei suffered a lot, but he tried to stay indifferent. But in the end, he broke and fell victim to hatred.

Junpei Yoshino was a high school student and appeared in the first season of Jujutsu Kaisen. He had one of the saddest cameos in the anime. Junpei was a victim of bullying but never hated the people who bullied him. He had no one except for his mother, who was his emotional support. Unfortunately, evil Mahito entered his life and tried to manipulate him.
Mahito constantly tried to manipulate and push him to the edge of his patience. Just as he was about to change, Junpei met Yuji Itadori. Yuji became a ray of sunshine in his dark life. But Mahito, being a Cursed Spirit, got Junpei’s mother killed and blamed it on one of the bullies. Junpei tried to kill him, but Yuji helped him understand Mahito’s true motive. But the evil cursed spirit killed him after transforming him into a monster.
Tite Kubo Was Emotionally Hit By Junpei’s Quote
Tite Kubo understood the emotional significance of the quote. Being an action-packed anime, people most often overlook these small but important life lessons. Junpei always tried to be indifferent even after all the bullying. But once he broke, he cursed the person who first coined that the opposite of love was indifference. These small details often provide insights into a character. Junpei might be a side character of season one, but Kubo was attracted to him emotionally.
