With the MCU busy crafting its next set of the World’s mightiest heroes, fans are still finding it hard to let the past go and are wishing for a cameo from Robert Downey Jr. in future MCU entries. But despite fans’ wishes, the actor doesn’t seem much open to the idea of reprising the iconic role, as he even refused to return for Marvel’s What If…? series, where Mick Wingert voiced the character of Iron Man

Robert Downey Jr was interested in making a cameo in this MCU show

Despite not returning for any of the Marvel Phase Four projects, there was one Marvel TV show, where Robert Downey Jr. once showcased his interest in making an appearance. Following MCU’s first attempt at expanding its brand in the television landscape with Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D., it seems RDJ was highly impressed by the show, which was created by Joss Whedon. Considering actors like Samuel L. Jackson, who made a special appearance in the show as Nick Fury, the Iron Man star hoped for a similar cameo in the show.

However, following the extra work that would be needed in order to make the idea come to fruition, the actor ultimately brushed off his plans of making a cameo in the critically acclaimed show. During his Ask Me Anything session on Reddit, the actor explained,

“Nothing is impossible. But there might be a fair amount of red tape involved in something like that. I love Clark Gregg, and am pleased the show is doing so well,”

But considering it was around a time when the MCU was just starting to bloom, after 12 years of playing the same character, RDJ doesn’t seem to be open to the idea of reprising the role anymore.

Robert Downey Jr has done everything he could with his MCU role

While reflecting on his journey as Iron Man in The Infinity Saga, Robert Downey Jr. explained that he is done with the role, as he has done everything he could with it. Even though fans are still hoping for the actor to make a return in the upcoming Avengers: Secret Wars, the chances of this happening aren’t the brightest at present. Downey Jr. stated,

“I’ve done all I could with that character and can do other things now. Now, being middle-aged, you start looking at the back nine and realize this is all part of the journey and things end. I am fortunate and eternally grateful to have wound up where I have,”

Although it would be great to witness him back in the MCU, considering that his story came full circle that resulted in his iconic send-off, it’s reasonable to see why RDJ returning won’t be the best idea.

Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D. is available to stream on Disney Plus.
