George Clooney filmed some extremely awful movies like Return of the Killer Tomatoes and made numerous TV appearances before his career took off. Many of them were unknown, like the comedy E/R, not to be confused with the program that made him famous, ER. Looking back, Clooney considers those earlier TV appearances to have been a necessary evil when he was still working to survive.
Clooney departed ER in 1999 to focus on his acting career after appearing in several films, such as Batman & Robin (1997), The Peacemaker (1997), and Out of Sight (1998). In the same year, he made an appearance in the highly regarded Three Kings. Clooney also played an escaped convict in the eccentric Coen brother’s movie O Brother, Where Are Thou? (2000), for which he won a Golden Globe.
George Clooney admitted to doing films for money
Oscar roundtable is a fancy dinner party with all the A-listers in Tinseltown. It is filled with memorable conversations, anecdotes, and breakthroughs and inevitably brings us closer to our heroes and idols. We get to know the man behind the mask and are simultaneously informed about acting and the art of filmmaking. George Clooney has been a part of many such roundtables and made them memorable. One of these times was when he confessed to doing films for money.
In the interview, Clooney spoke against people calling him a sell-out for doing commercials. The actor explained that the commercials pay the bills, and it also allows him to invest his time in movies and choose a good film. He said, “I don’t give a sh*t. I don’t r*pe the budget of a movie…. As an actor, all bets are off if you need money.”
George Clooney also acknowledges his privileged to do films that he loves, and pay his bills by shooting commercials. The actor admits that he too did some shitty films in his past, they were mostly for money as he was broke. Clooney said,
“I’ve done really [crappy] movies or [crappy] jobs when I was broke, and people go, ‘Why did you do Return of the Killer Tomatoes?’ Because I got the job!”
The ER star has often opened up about his acting choices like in one interview he confessed that Batman and Robin was bad experience. He did not enjoy the shooting and making of the film, it was after that he made better acting choices. Clooney learned a lesson and chose scripts that appealed to him.
George Clooney sold women’s shoes before becoming an actor
Before they become famous, all actors work a few odd jobs. In London, Michael Fassbender worked as a bartender. Charlize Theron was a dancer and model before she made headway into Hollywood. George Clooney also sold shoes for ladies.
That’s accurate, imagine walking into a store and asking an 18-year-old Clooney to bring you a pair of heels from your neighborhood department shop in 1979. The task is not that simple though, Clooney explained, “There was a whole generation of women who had a toe cut off to fit in tight pumps,”
Today Clooney is a big name in not just Hollywood but overseas too, he recently appeared in Ticket to Paradise reuniting with Julia Roberts. The film did not receive positive reviews from critics but the audience appreciated the exotic location, glossy tough and two extremely attractive people engaging in some heated banter. Ticket to Paradise is a breezy watch which lacks innovation.
