At Star Wars celebration last year, fans were treated with a surprising announcement that Daisy Ridley was gonna return as Rey in a new Star Wars film led by her character. The film will be directed by Sharmeen Obaid-Chinoy, and Ridley is quite excited about the unique approach that the film will take.

She talked to Variety about how young she was when she first starred in Star Wars: The Force Awakens. She claims that it took time for her to feel ownership of the role and realize the responsibility of leading a popular franchise. Now, as she is in her 30s, she expects that she can be a better performer in the new film. She said,

“When I first started, I was, like, 20. I was the youngest on set. It took me the first two Star Wars films to feel worthy of being there. Now I’m in my 30s… hopefully, I’ve got better as a performer.”

This new film has already been marred in controversy after one of Obaid-Chinoy’s interviews started going viral online, where she states that she “likes to make men feel uncomfortable” (via X). The director was talking about her documentary work, and the statement had nothing to do with Star Wars. It remains to be seen if this baseless controversy affects the production of the film at all.

Daisy Ridley is returning to a galaxy far far away as the makers of the new Star Wars film seem to have conceived a great story for her character, Rey. The Sharmeen Obaid-Chinoy-directed film is expected to be the next feature Star Wars film after 2019’s Star Wars: The Rise of Skywalker.

Ridley has now revealed to Variety that Obaid-Chinoy’s pitch for the film is amazing and also praised her previous documentary work. She promised that the wait for the film would be worthwhile. She said,

“The short answer is I don’t know. I’m excited to do the job, but not because Sharmeen is a woman. Her documentaries are amazing. Her idea for the story is cool as shit. No spoilers, but she gave me a rundown of the entire story. If it weren’t amazing, I would have been like, ‘OK, call me in five years.’ But it’s worthwhile.”
