Matthew Vaughn in a recent appearance at New York Comic Con pointed at one major flaw in Daniel Craig-led James Bond era. However, he was quick to share that it eventually influenced him to craft his Kingsman series. The Kingsman garnered a dedicated fan following and also became quite successful at the box office. What made it unique is its stylized action sequences and humor along with the unique take it took on the spy genre.

However, when it comes to the Bond era which saw Craig in the titular role, many couldn’t help but agree that the movies were undoubtedly gritty. It became quite a major reason which eventually helped the former in making his spy franchise possible.

The filmmaker recently spoke at New York Comic Con via Comicbook sharing about the making behind the Kingsman series. Touching on the topic, he also revealed that the 007 franchise’s take on Daniel Craig’s movies was quite too serious.

Matthew Vaughn shared,

“[The idea for Kingsman] literally came with Mark Miller and I in a pub, and, I love you Daniel Craig, but we were just thinking ‘Bond’s got a bit too serious.'”

He continued sharing,

“We just came up with it literally over a few pints of Guinness at a pub called The Windsor Castle … We were talking about how Ian Fleming didn’t want to cast Sean Connery. And the director of Dr. No was like to Fleming, ‘Give me two weeks and I will transform the Scottish big bloke into an English gentleman.’ So he took him to Savile Row. He converted Connery into Bond and we thought, ‘Well, let’s take that idea and do our version because Connery had his rough edges.’ So that was the kernel of the idea.”

Thus, their pints at the pub eventually led to the basics of their movie, Kingsman: The Secret Service. It became an immense success in the spy genre with critics widely acclaiming the movie including its dark humor. However, when it comes to Craig’s version of the Bond series, the gritty tone remains a flaw that has been pointed quite many times.

While Daniel Craig‘s portrayal as the titular character in the James Bond series starting from Casino Royale (2006) gave a revamp to the franchise, it surely made it quite too gritty. While the franchise rose to new heights with the addition of a serious tone in the movies, the lack of humor eventually began to affect the saga. The bloodshed surely added much gritty realism to Craig’s 007 which further showed that the franchise was all in to bring more gravitas, unlike its predecessors.

While supporting characters did add a dime of fun, it was still not enough to counter the overall tone of the series. However, the bleak nature surely helped to appeal to contemporary audiences which further made the franchise popular.

The Knives Out star took his final outing as the 007 agent with the 2021 movie, No Time to Die. The franchise is set to evolve with a new face that will add something new to the long-standing legacy of the Bond franchise.
