The Ink Black Heart follows the story of the murder of an animator who is subjected to online hate and is even accused of being transphobic.

J.K. Rowling clears the confusion around The Ink Black Heart‘s Eddie Ledwell

The Ink Black Heart revolves around the murder of a creator and animator, Eddie Ledwell, who was initially subjected to online hate and abuse and was later murdered. Ledwell was also accused of being transphobic and that is why when the book initially came out in 2022, fans asked J.K. Rowling if the character was based on herself. This is because she has also been subjected to online hate and accused of transphobia in the past.

J.K. Rowling decided to clear up the confusion around the accusations in a Q&A on Robert Galbraith’s website and wrote,

“With this book – I had been planning this book for so long and then a couple of the things that happen in this book have since happened to me. And so, I would like to be very clear that I haven’t written this book as an answer to anything that happened to me.

Although I have to say when it did happen to me, those who had already read the book in manuscript form were – are you clairvoyant? I wasn’t clairvoyant, I just – yeah, it was just one of those weird twists. Sometimes life imitates art more than one would like.”
