Jackie Chan is one of the most globally recognized action stars. With films like the Rush Hour trilogy Police Story, Drunken Master, and more, the actor once delivered hits like no other big-screen star. At one point in time, the martial artist cum actor was raking in eye-watering amounts of money. However, as with any celebrity, that wasn’t always the case. While ups and downs and poor box office performances are a part of every star’s life, there was one project where he took a huge salary but the film failed to sail past even the $75 million mark.

As per the Bomb Report, Around the World in 80 Days (2004), was one of the costliest disasters in movie history and yet Jackie Chan took a humongous check for it. The site reports that the martial artist took home $18.5 million for the movie due to his pay-or-play contract. Such kinds of contracts are only given to the biggest stars of the movie world and it basically guarantees an actor a certain designated amount irrespective of whether the movie gets filmed or not.

Chan’s involvement with the movie didn’t give it the big opening the producers were hoping for. Thanks to the mixed reviews and steep competition, the film folded by the third weekend and pulled in a US run of less than $25 million.

As per the outlet:

“Reviews were mixed and Around The World In 80 Days pulled in a miserable $7,576,132 — placing #9 for the weekend led by DodgeBall. The film declined 43.6% the following weekend to $4,274,941 before crashing 76.3% the third weekend to $1,015,138. Around The World In 80 Days closed its US run with a terrible $24,008,137. Disney would see returned about $13.2 million after theaters take their percentage of the gross and no cash overages would flow back to Walden (the production house of Phil Anschutz).”

The offshore numbers weren’t as humiliating but they were under $50 million or $48,170,758 to be exact. The Bomb Report revealed that “this remake was one of the costliest blunders at the box office — which ended as nearly a $100 million write-down.” However, the box office dud didn’t affect Jackie Chan’s future earning capabilities.
