Will Smith married Jada Pinkett Smith on December 31, 1997, and they share two children. However, the couple has often been under heavy public scrutiny, particularly because of the admitted unconventional nature of their marriage.

In a 2021 interview with GQ, the Bad Boys star opened up about his unconventional relationship with Pinkett Smith. He said:

“Jada never believed in conventional marriage.… Jada had family members that had an unconventional relationship.” 

Smith revealed that there was a difference in his and Pinkett Smith’s upbringing which resulted in different views on relationships. He added:

“There were significant endless discussions about, what is relational perfection? What is the perfect way to interact as a couple?”

During the interview, Smith also admitted that his and Pinkett Smith’s marriage stopped being monogamous after a certain point as they chose to give each other more freedom. However, Smith’s own admission about his wife’s views on marriage could be seen as a major red flag.

Furthermore, Pinkett Smith has admitted that she never wanted to get married to Smith. However, she felt pressured into getting married because she was a young actress who was pregnant with Smith’s child at the time. As a result, it is evident that Pinkett Smith did not believe in the institution of marriage and she was never ready for such a commitment.

In October 2023, Pinkett Smith came out with her memoir Worthy, which discusses her relationship with Will Smith in great length. While promoting her memoir, The Matrix Resurrections actress confirmed that she and Smith were no longer romantically together and had been separated since 2016.

However, despite having parted ways the couple has not officially filed for divorce. During an appearance on Red Table Talk, in 2018, Pinkett Smith stated the following:

“For me personally, I’m not mature enough to have a divorce. I’m just not. I don’t think I would ever be mature enough.”

The actress also admitted that she did not wish to get into the messy nature of asset breakups with Smith. Similarly, Smith has also seemingly admitted that he and Pinkett Smith were no longer married in a traditional sense.

“We don’t even say we’re married anymore. We refer to ourselves as life partners.”

Smith made the above statement during an appearance on TIDAL’s Rap Radar podcast in 2018. As a result, from the couple’s words, it is evident they are no longer in a monogamous marriage but have refused to officially separate by filing for divorce.
