The legacy of The Terminator runs deep. The series, which began all the way back in 1984 with the movie directed by James Cameron, still commands an unassailable place in fans’ hearts. It’s a cult classic, after all, one which propelled Arnold Schwarzenegger into the annals of the Hollywood Hall of Fame. No small feat, is it? But everything is not smooth with the franchise at the instance. Some relations have turned sour.
Terminator: Dark Fate amassed $261 million worldwide
James Cameron, who was at the helm of the first two movies, took on the mantle of a producer for the sixth iteration in the series, Terminator: Dark Fate. The 2019 flick was directed by Tim Miller.
The movie, starring Linda Hamilton, Arnold Schwarzenegger, Mackenzie Davis, and Natalia Reyes, amongst others, managed to amass $261 million worldwide, a little way off the previous iterations of the movie. But the major issue emerging from the movie was something else altogether.
Tim Miller vowed not to work with James Cameron
Tim Miller and James Cameron found working with each other to be quite a bother. There was no end of differences between the two, some creative and some, well, emotional. Their relationship turned so acrimonious at a point that working together could not even be an option. The Deadpool director has vowed that he will never work with the Avatar director. He said,
“It has nothing to do with whatever trauma I have from the experience; it’s more that I just don’t want to be in a situation again where I don’t have the control to do what I think is right.”
All this over one decision – casting Arnold Schwarzenegger.
It was all because of Arnold Schwarzenegger
Tim Miller and James Cameron couldn’t reach an agreement on involving Arnold Schwarzenegger in Terminator: Dark Fate. The 65-year-old director said,
“I think the problem, and I’m going to wear this one, is that I refused to do it without Arnold. Tim didn’t want Arnold, but I said, ‘Look, I don’t want that. Arnold and I have been friends for 40 years, and I could hear it, and it would go like this: ‘Jim, I can’t believe you’re making a Terminator movie without me.’”
As we all know, the former Governor of California would feature in the film. Another difference was whether or not it was written to cast Linda Hamilton in the movie, with Tim Miller supporting The Refuge star’s inclusion. Cameron would later remark that all these contributed to making the film “your granddad’s Terminator movie.”
Despite all the tumultuous experiences, the two have resolved their differences and continue to remain friends.
