It is a happy, pink Barbie world, and we are simply loving it. Starring Margot Robbie and Ryan Gosling, the fantasy comedy film, which is based on the Mattel doll that first gained popularity in 1959, dominated the box office in its first weekend. Barbie is in no mood to stop here!

The movie, which Greta Gerwig co-wrote and directed while starring Gosling and Robbie, two Hollywood legends, set numerous records. They produced one of the biggest movies of the year in collaboration with Mattel. Soon it might surpass all others as the top-grossing film of 2023. The movie is currently the third highest-grossing movie of the year and still has a ton of room to grow after its impressive second weekend in theaters.

In its second weekend, Barbie continued to rule the box office, exceeding all expectations. The existential comedy is easily outperforming other noteworthy 2023 blockbusters like James Gunn and Chris Pratt’s Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3.

Barbie Is Already The Third Biggest Film Of 2023

If you have not been keeping up with the weekend box office, we will start with the most recent astounding figures for Barbie.

With a 43% decline from its record-breaking first weekend, Barbie added $93 million domestically to its ever-rising total in weekend two. With another strong weekend overseas, Greta Gerwig‘s latest has now grossed $774.5 million globally, placing it third in the global box office for 2023 films.

The Margot Robbie starring movie is currently trailing Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3 ($844.8 million) and The Super Mario Bros. Movie ($1.35 billion). Thus, in a short while, it won’t be wrong to say that the film will surpass James Gunn’s Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3.

Then, the only thing standing in Robbie’s way of her portrayal of the beloved doll achieving total box office dominance is Nintendo’s illustrious plumber.

How this achievement is made even more remarkable? Well, it took place while Christopher Nolan’s Oppenheimer and Greta Gerwig’s Barbie, two highly publicized rivals, were both showing in theaters.

Nevertheless, both films have been able to draw sizable crowds, as Oppenheimer came in at number two over the weekend and brought in an additional $46.2 million. The fact that both movies are doing so well at the box office makes it one of the most thrilling box office battles in history.

Can Barbie Outperform The Super Mario Bros. Movie?

The key question at this point is whether Barbie has enough steam left in the tank to surpass The Super Mario Bros. Movie internationally. The animated adaptation of the Nintendo video game series was a smash hit for Universal and Illumination earlier this year.

For what it is worth, Barbie is currently leading The Super Mario Bros. Movie at this stage in each film’s run in theaters. The latter had earned just over $700 million worldwide after its second weekend, but it also only experienced a 37% drop, indicating a better hold.

Thus, the outcome will depend on whether competition forces a larger drop for Barbie in the upcoming weeks.

It’s now a question of when and not if Barbie will hit the $1 billion mark, something which could happen as early as its third weekend. It would be the second movie in 2023 to accomplish the feat, and it appears likely to eventually surpass The Super Mario Bros. Movie’s $1.35 billion in box office revenue.

The entertainment industry is now eagerly awaiting updates on Barbie’s skyrocketing box office results in what looks to be an exciting cinematic showdown.

The film is currently running in theaters.
