The approval of a follow-up movie was brought by the immense box office success of The Batman after it grossed over $772 million worldwide. With that in mind, it was already expected that the studio would shell out a fortune to get a sequel coming.

Is The Batman 2 Really Canceled? James Gunn Debunks Conspiracy Theory

In a Threads post, director James Gunn responded to a fan’s query on the veracity of the rumor currently spreading like wildfire online that he scrapped The Batman: Part II. His answer? A resounding “No.”

An update from Variety claimed, “The project remains in development and does not yet have a greenlight.” This meant that while Matt Reeves has been very busy gearing up for the film, with Robert Pattinson returning for the titular role, there has not been any official announcement from Warner Bros regarding the start of its production.

The disappointing report elicited an assumption from fans, as evident in a post from Giant Freakin Robot, that “The Batman 2 will just be canceled altogether.” But thanks to Gunn’s latest update – the sequel will still make its way to the theaters very soon.

He also explained via DC’s blog that they plan to continue whatever ideas Reeves has for the movie. Gunn is also involved in the making of the project.

Matt is working on The Batman – Part II, which he thinks of as a Batman crime saga that also includes the Penguin TV series. The Batman is its own thing. Matt’s hard at work on it. He came in and pitched us some amazing stuff the other day, so our plan is for that to continue.”

The Guardians of the Galaxy director is very active on social media and has always been providing updates on every DC project, so it is no wonder he is pretty much aware of the rumors as well.

Fans were overjoyed with the announcement of The Batman sequel back in 2022, but what does Matt Reeves plan for the long haul? An update from The Hollywood Reporter claimed he also wants to branch out to other villains in Batman’s world.

Reeves is plotting more. The filmmaker is meeting with writers and directors to build out movies — yes movies, not just series — focused on Batman rogue’s gallery, both established and more obscure, with characters ranging from the Scarecrow to Clayface to Professor Pyg. All those projects are in the very early stages of gestation.”

This is very exciting news since The Batman: Part II might just be the perfect place to meet other villains that fans have never seen in any of the existing Batman films out there.
