James Gunn has done it again. He has created something that is extraordinary and brilliant and poured his heart and soul into the story. As Marvel wraps up the story of the Guardians, it truly feels like the end of an era as tragically impactful as the sudden demise of the original Avengers. And in that, Gunn has proven his ability to spin a tale of a found family that has slowly crept up on us without warning, latching onto us with all their strength and might, and making us fall in love with a force that defies logic. Why else would the demise of a B-tier superhero group feel like a blow to the heart of the CBM franchise?

James Gunn Brings the Guardians to the End of the Galaxy

The Guardians of the Galaxy evolved from an oddball group of strays into a closely-knit family of space-faring adventurers. The most unusual crew meeting at the right place and the right time, the group’s origin in itself is one that defies the norms of heroism and bravery and yet they have traversed and scavenged the vast expanses of the galaxy – together, saving it on occasions more than one. Now, the Marvel Cinematic Universe seems incomplete without the dysfunctional, bickering, and asinine group that has become as much of a family to each other as they have become to the fandom.

Not only does Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3 spell the end of their epic and overarching space sagas but it also brings to a solemn close the chapter on the origin of one of its crucial heroes. James Gunn has repeatedly asserted how the entire Guardians trilogy has been adding up to this – the GotG arc is essentially Rocket’s story and he is the official protagonist of the franchise. But now, after all this time, he is done running.

With the looming threat of Rocket’s death – an event enough to rip the group apart or bring them closer than ever, Gunn’s superheroes say a final goodbye to the family they have found and loved without restraint – a family they have selflessly grown to claim as their own despite not finding love and acceptance from the world they were born into.

Fans Left in Tears With James Gunn’s Video From Gotg Sets

“We’ll all fly away together into the forever and beautiful sky”

Guardians of the Galaxy Vol 3 is one final hurrah, for Rocket and his found family. It is an origin story and the saga that ends it all. And in that finality lies the tragedy that the audience knowingly steps into. In a new video from behind the scenes, Chris Pratt asserts how Vol. 3 is “really a fantastic story from the brain of a mad genius.” James Gunn has just made that story and its end that much more tangible with his kaleidoscopic look into the family that is both fictional and real, on the screen and off, and the eccentric love that binds them all together until the very end.

As such, the audience will not be ready for the grand finale that will put to rest the story of the most unlikely superhero team in the galaxy. Gunn’s rendition, as we know it, with all its song and dance numbers will end with Vol. 3. No longer will the fans find the best 80s track flooding the scenes or baby Groot finding his groove to Mr. Blue Sky and Peter Quill saving the universe one dance-off at a time.

But even with what Gunn has created and is now leaving behind, the Guardians hold the promise of one day finding their way back to the Marvel universe, in this rendition or in a new mold, simply because of the legacy that they have become through the visionary approach of the director.
