DC Studios co-CEO and writer of the movie Superman: Legacy is all set for the new version of Superman. The movie revolves around the early life of Superman, from being a commoner like Clark Kent to discovering his roots. The film will focus on the youth superhero and his life at the time. The plot details have been kept under wraps, and as per reports, the casting is yet to start.

In a recent interview, James Gunn opened up on the sentiment he wishes to portray for the movie. The director of the film wanted to keep its emotional aspect.

James Gunn does not want an unemotional Superman: Legacy

The role of Superman was played by ace actor Henry Cavill from Man of Steel in 2013 till Black Adam in 2022. The British actor won the hearts of his fans with his fabulous acting and action sequences. Cavill played the dark version of the fan-favorite comic book action star Superman in his DC movies. However, in the upcoming film Superman: Legacy, the writer Gunn wishes to bring forth another emotion of the caped savior.

According to an official statement by DC Studios,

“Superman: Legacy tells the story of Superman’s journey to reconcile his Kryptonian heritage with his human upbringing as Clark Kent of Smallville, Kansas. He is the embodiment of truth, justice, and the American way, guided by human kindness in a world that sees kindness as old-fashioned.”

Talking about the upcoming movie James Gunn shared,

“I can’t say I’m looking for any particular emotions to bring out through Superman, but I don’t want it to be unemotional. I don’t want it to deny that we are, as human beings, emotional characters and that Superman is also that.”

The writer-director shared in an interview with Variety,

“The next Superman has to be someone who has all the humanity that Superman has but he’s also an alien”

“It’s gotta be somebody who has the kindness and the compassion that Superman has and be somebody who you want to give a hug.”

Superman: Legacy revolves around the caped star’s journey to strike a balance between his Kryptonian heritage and his human upbringing.

The cast of James Gunn’s Superman: Legacy

As stated earlier by director James Gunn and Superman actor Henry Cavill, the new movie will have a younger actor as the lead. Henry Cavill is officially not part of the project.  

The Hollywood Reporter shared that David Corenswet, who recently starred in Pearl alongside Mia Goth is among the top contenders, for the role of a journalist and Son of Krypton. As per reports, he has reached the screen test stage, which will take place the next month. Two other actors are also considered for the parts, but their names are yet to be revealed.

The role of Lois Lane, a Daily Planet reporter, and Superman’s lady love, was earlier essayed by Amy Adams in the Man Of Steel. Lane will also have a new face in Superman: Legacy. As per the reports, Sex Education fame Emma Mackey, Emmy-award-winning actress Rachel Brosnahan from The Marvelous Mrs. MaiselBridgerton actress Phoebe Dynevor, and Scream VI actress Samara Weaving are in the run for playing the female lead in James Gunn’s project.

Superman: Legacy will have a global theatrical release on July 11, 2025.
