Since James Gunn took over as DC head in November 2022, the franchise has seen a complete overhaul. This reboot also came with the shocking news of Henry Cavill’s exit as Superman as well as news of the alleged departure of Gal Gadot as Wonder Woman. Fans have expressed their concerns over these decisions and have openly criticized James Gunn for the same, but the Guardians of the Galaxy director has promised that the DCU will be bigger and better than ever. An exciting project on the cards involves a favorite superhero, Wonder Woman.
Is Paradise Lost the new Wonder Woman animated series?
As one of their first projects, DC heads James Gunn and Peter Safran have announced that the franchise will delve into a Game of Thrones-style take on Wonder Woman’s history for their HBO Max series titled Paradise Lost. The show is touted to be filmed in live-action and will take an in-depth look at the politics and relationships in Themyscira, an all-female-led society. James Gunn described the series by saying,
“It’s an origin story of, how did this society women come about? What does it mean? What are their politics like? What are their rules? Who’s in charge? What are all the games that they play with each other to get to the top? I think it’s a really exciting thing.”
James Gunn took to Twitter to respond to a tweet and confirmed that the production of a Wonder Woman animated series was underway. Whether the animated series he is referring to is Paradise Lost or a completely new project altogether is not yet evident.
Will Gal Gadot return to DC as Wonder Woman?
In the process of restructuring the DCU, James Gunn has also invited a lot of criticism for the untimely exit of DC’s biggest superhero, Superman. While addressing rumors about the possible departure of Gal Gadot as Wonder Woman, the CEO replied in an ambivalent fashion and said,
“We don’t know. We’ve talked to Gal. She’s up for doing stuff. We’re not sure what we’re going to do with that. All I can tell you really right now really is just Henry [Cavill] and Ben [Affleck] are not a part of this universe”.
From his comments, it seems like there could still be hope for Wonder Woman to play a significant role in the DCU. With keen-eyed fans already spotting hints of the Justice League member’s presence in the trailer of The Flash, it remains to be seen how the future of the character will play out in the franchise.
