James Gunn was quite excited for the world to see Andrés Muschietti’s The Flash starring Ezra Miller. In fact, he even went as far as calling it one of the greatest superhero movies he has ever seen. Needless to say, fans were pretty excited and a 72% score on Rotten Tomatoes score only helped boost the hype. Unfortunately, the excitement died down soon after.
Rotten Tomatoes is a good way of finding critically-acclaimed movies for your movie night. While sometimes the scores may sometimes be more or less than what you thought the movie is worth, it checks out more often than not. Recently, the early score for Angel Manuel Soto’s Blue Beetle is out and it’s in favor of the film. However, the fans have their suspicions.
Fans Are Suspicious of Blue Beetle’s Early Reviews
Angel Manuel Soto’s Blue Beetle starring Xolo Maridueña will be hitting the theatres in a blink of an eye as the DC Universe prepares itself for yet another round of brutal feedback from the fans.
James Gunn once stated about The Flash, “Like, it’s one of the best superhero movies I’ve ever seen. Andy Muschietti did an amazing job…The Flash is f*cking amazing.” After the film’s release, though, fans absolutely did not agree with Gunn, and neither did the critics apparently as the Rotten Tomatoes score came down from 72% to 64%.
Thus, fans now know not to believe anything before they themselves see the film and come up with their own conclusions. Something similar is happening with Blue Beetle. The film’s early reviews saw it opening to a certified fresh score of 86%. Despite the high score, fans are refusing to get their hopes high.

The 86% score came from a total of 29 critics. Therefore, it is only fair to note that as of the moment this article is being written, 80 reviews have been dropped for Blue Beetle and the score has gone down to 82%. Will Blue Beetle pick up the pace or will the score keep getting lower and lower as more and more critics voice their verdicts? We’ll find out tomorrow!
James Gunn Didn’t Have Much Input for Blue Beetle’s Final Cut
If you are willing to take Gunn’s word for how good Blue Beetle is, then read on. Talking to GamesRadar+, director Soto revealed that neither Gunn nor Peter Safran had “much input” when it came to the final cut of the film. He stated that while the studio is always pretty hands-on, Gunn and Safran let the team do their own thing.
“The studio always, generally, has their hands on it. As far as the essence of the story, [James Gunn and Peter Safran] liked what we were doing, and they respected the vision and what we were trying to do with the film. They really did appreciate the fresh take, the nostalgic factor of how we start the film by taking the audience to see the family and fall in love with them for a prologue-of-sorts.”
Well, if Gunn and Safran didn’t have many notes for the final cut, then they must be quite impressed. Only time will tell if the film manages to impress the critics and audience as well.
