Constantine 2 has been generating a lot of buzz among fans in addition to James Gunn’s new DC slate. The cult classic superhero film was released in 2005, and centers on a sinister conspiracy that poses a threat to the entire world. The plot basically follows John Constantine (Keanu Reeves), an exorcist and occult detective, who can travel between Earth and Hell.

Deadline confirmed in September of last year that Warner Bros. would create a follow-up to this Francis Lawrence-directed movie, despite multiple rumors to the contrary.

Yes, Constantine 2 has not been canceled, a Warner Bros. spokesperson reportedly confirmed to EW. However, social media rumors that circulated online suggested that it had been canceled.

Well, Reeves would return for a second time as John Constantine, the magic-wielding occult specialist, with director Francis Lawrence, who also helmed the first adaptation.

As per prior reports, a new interconnected universe will develop under James Gunn and Peter Safran’s direction, strengthening the franchise as a whole. But later, Warner Bros. Discovery did confirm that an old DC franchise is being revived before the big announcement in January.

Constantine 2 formally started development back in September 2022. Francis Lawrence, who directed Constantine, will helm the follow-up, though not much has happened since the announcement. Meanwhile, a fan recently asked Reeves during an AMA on Reddit if he had discussed Constantine 2 with Gunn and expressed hope that it would still happen.

Despite his continued optimism, The Matrix actor acknowledged that he has spoken with Gunn about Constantine 2 in the past.

A fan asked:

“Have you spoken with James Gunn at all in regards to Constantine 2? Hope we get to see it!”

And the 58-year-old Canadian actor responded:

“Yes, and me too.”

Thus, the opportunity to link it to a shared universe would arise from Reeves’ enormous popularity and Constantine 2 receiving a sequel nearly 20 years later.

Given that there is no official mention of Constantine 2 under the new DC Universe or Elseworlds, it is possible that the studio is preparing a standalone universe for the occult detective.
