Actor Jason Momoa first joined the DC franchise as Arthur Curry / Aquaman in Zack Snyder’s 2016 movie Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice. A movie focused specifically on his character, Aquaman, was released in 2018 and became a massive financial success for the studios. A sequel titled, Aquaman and the Lost Kingdom, was then planned but during its production, the filmmakers ran into several issues.
Due to Amber Heard’s highly publicized court battle with her ex-husband, Johnny Depp, many demanded her removal from the franchise, in fact, she was almost fired, not because of her court case, but because of her poor chemistry with Jason Momoa. The early test screenings of the sequel have been a disaster and the film has been reshot multiple times. With DC Studios’ co-CEO James Gunn planning a soft reboot of the franchise, Momoa is positive that he will also be a part of the new DC Universe despite the projected failure of Aquaman and the Lost Kingdom.
Jason Momoa is sure that he will be a part of James Gunn’s DC Universe
Recently, actor Jason Momoa appeared on The Tonight Show Starring Jimmy Fallon and talked about his future in DC Studios’ co-CEO James Gunn’s soft reboot. The actor said,
“I mean this is kinda like the end of – this DC universe. I mean things have happened before so I guess if people like it, there will always be a place for me at DC – they like me.”
Momoa’s performance as Arthur Curry / Aquaman was loved by fans all over the world. His iteration of the character is one of the main reasons behind the success of 2018’s Aquaman.
The test screenings have been a failure
As per multiple sources, the film has faced many delays due to bad test screenings. The film has a budget of roughly $205 million because of all the reshoots. DC can no longer do any more reshoots as the budget is already massive so they will have to release what they have created.
Initially, the film was delayed due to Amber Heard’s court battle. Heard, who plays Mera in the franchise, faced allegations of domestic abuse made against her by her ex-husband Johnny Depp. A petition to have Heard fired from the franchise went viral on social media. Eventually, DC did consider recasting Mera, but that was because of her poor chemistry with Momoa and not because of her controversy. After being in production for almost 5 years, Aquaman and The Lost Kingdom is scheduled to be released in the United States on December 22, 2023.
