Minecraft has been under development for nearly a decade now, game adaptations are the new superhero films. With shows like The Last of Us and Lego movies have started to gain traction, their success has prompted similar adaptations to see the light of day.
One of them is Minecraft which has had too many announcements without any successful release yet. Some big and renowned names attached to the project like DCU star Jason Momoa, and Shawn Levy, director of the critically acclaimed It’s Always Sunny in Philadelphia, Rob McElhenney.
Jason Momoa’s Minecraft release date revealed
In 2014 the film was announced by Warner Bros and there was no update or concrete information following the announcement. In 2022 through Minecraft’s official blog, the announcement was made again, that Minecraft will release on 2022, 4 March. This too turned out to be a disappointment as the film was never released and was shelved further. According to the blog, the story is about,
“a teenage girl and her unlikely group of adventurers. After the malevolent Ender Dragon sets out on a path of destruction, they must save their beautiful, blocky Overworld.”
The blog continues,
“The very talented director Peter Sollett (Nick & Norah’s Infinite Playlist) will be making sure everyone stands in the right place and delivers award-worthy performances. No pressure! Also, we’re partnered with Warner Bros, a company that’s been around the block. So to speak. What we’re trying to say is, this movie is in very capable hands!”
Now WB has confirmed another date, that is two years from on 4th April 2025 Minecraft will hit theaters. Should it? This is the more prominent question. Many say no, while some fans of Momoa are willing to give the film a shot, the style of animation remains the biggest concern even now.
Fans backlash against Minecraft after disappointing Super Mario film
Despite some cool and talented people working on the project fans are in no mood for more cash grabs. After the disappointing film The Super Mario Bros starring Chris Pratt, many are suspicious of films using nostalgia to bring footfall.
Feels like it’s gonna be very loosely based on Minecraft. There isn’t gonna be a 2 hour movie mining iron, getting iron tools, grinding diamonds, grinding enchants, grinding sand/gravel/white dye cause they want to make a base in white concrete and then beat the draggon

This sounds….weird for this type of game. They could have done an animated route… maybe the Wreck it Ralph kind of style?

Why does it have to be live action? It would work way better animated. Can’t they just get element animation to do it or at least help with it? Like cmon, tell me this wouldn’t be sick for a 100 min movie. pic.twitter.com/gErnyPmHym

Stop it.

They need to start a cinematic universe alongside Ryan Reynolds as Pikachu and Chris Pratt as Super Mario

@AstroNemesisx they’re making anything a movie now

It is not surprising to see such a push against the film’s release especially when this is the third or the fourth, oh we have all lost track by now, the film has been announced a few times in the past already. WB was not able to deliver, and now it is hard to trust them with the release date and the quality of the film.
Minecraft is releasing on 4 April 2025.
