Jason Momoa Wants to Join MCU as Wolverine

Aquaman star Jason Momoa recently professed his interest to play the iconic role of Wolverine. Hugh Jackman, the actor who portrayed the adamantium-clawed mutant for 17 years, retired from his role with 2017’s Logan. Momoa said he would love to replace Jackman and join the Marvel Cinematic Universe.

While in San Antonio at Celebrity Fan Fest, Momoa was asked which Marvel character he’d like to take on. Not one to play it coy, Jason answered directly by saying, “Wolverine. Oh I’d love to play Wolverine.” He also praised Hugh Jackman, who is now retired from the role, saying “He was phenomenal. I grew up just loving Wolverine.”

The actor is no stranger to portraying superhero roles. His most popular movie, Aquaman, was a massive blockbuster hit garnering $1.14 billion in the box office. It is undoubtedly the biggest break for DC Extended Universe worldwide. Momoa is set to reprise his role as Arthur Curry, the half-man half-Atlantian, for its 2022 sequel.

Hugh Jackman carried the role of Wolverine for almost two decades. In 2017, he filmed his last movie appearance as the clawed mutant in the critically acclaimed movie Logan. 20th Century Fox owned the rights to the X-Men franchise until they recently merged with Disney. And now that the X-Men family is back to its rightful owner—Marvel—fans are clamoring to know who would wear the claws made of steel.

James Howlett, also known as Wolverine, first appeared in the 1974 issue #180 of The Incredible Hulk created by Roy Thomas, Len, Wein and John Romita Sr. He possesses a healing factor that enables him to cure any wound at will. After the experiment on him, his bone claws were reprogrammed to be made of Adamantium steel. However, in the early X-Men films, it was shown that he is not immune to a special kind of silver bullet. It did not kill him, though, but he lost his memory.

Others actors who have expressed their enthusiasm for the role include Daniel Radcliffe (Harry Potter) and Keanu Reeves (John Wick). Marvel’s president Kevin Feige has not stated any specific details yet regarding Wolverine‘s casting or the entire X-Men franchise. With this in mind, there is still no confirmation if Wolverine will be back on the big screen anytime soon.
