It was a gift that Darren Aronofsky gave us through his movie, Mother! Although it is an epic piece of art, Jennifer Lawrence found it too deep.
Mother! is a movie that makes you question yourself, and so did Lawrence. It did win her the New Mexico Film Critic (NMFC) Award in 2017, while she also got nominated for a number of other awards, but at first, she was not ready to be a part of that script.
Jennifer Lawrence threw the script of Mother!
In an episode of Actors on Actors by Variety, it was the Hunger Games actor with Adam Sandler discussing their experiences about how they handled the fans and critics. While Jennifer Lawrence spoke about Mother! Sandler discussed The Meyerowitz Stories.
During this conversation, the actor from No Hard Feelings said that she has been a big fan of Aronofsky’s work and that she was planning to work with him for a really long time. While she discussed this with the Grown Ups actor, she also said
“He came to atlanta and he didnt have a script yet. He just had these ideas and these metaphors”
she spoke of the pre-development phase of the movie which grossed $44 Million across worldwide box offices.
Further explaining, the Red Sparrow actor stated that she and The Whale director are politically the same
“We both believe in climate change. He told me these weird ideas and themes but really any narrative. I though it was amazing. If he’s got some bombastic ideas like writing God as a narcissistic artist. Its gonna be pretty cool”
She was all in for the movie that The Fountain director had in mind but then what changed her mind?
“A few months later, he wrote the whole script in five days and started flushing it out. I read the script. The first time I read the script, I threw it on the floor I didin’t even want it in my house. I thought it was so F**ked up on such deep level. But that’s when I knew that’s what he was doing.”
Both Jennifer Lawrence and Sandler can be heard talking about the great plot the movie had and the big picture that Aronofsky put through in an artistic way. Lawrence starred alongside Javier Bardem, Michelle Pfeiffer, Ed Harris and Kristen Wiig in Mother!.

The movie is said to be the most divisive film in recent history that invites interpretation. And so far people have called it a roller coaster that takes you through the Old Testament and then leaves all the biblical stuff behind, introducing you to the historical records, while also giving you a huge reality check. The character of Jennifer Lawrence, who is referred to as Mother is actually the Mother Earth that embodies unspeakable pain.
The whole movie and the characters in it soon became a hot topic, long-lasting debate and continuing criticism after its release. This was the movie where the Joy actor left all of that she had learned before, behind her and adapted something truly fresh. And by fresh we mean a character that was new for her and as for the audience.
So far, it can be said that the role we saw Lawrence in, in the movie Mother! would be her first and last. As the Dont Look Up actor has stated to Entertainment that she won’t be able to do it again, also saying “I did it once and I gave it my all.”
Mother! is a thriller movie that was called Day Six on the set, which somewhat referred to the creation and the end of the universe. There are still a number of annotations and theories, but the most common one is that it talks about Mother Earth going through a lot of torture. Mother! was made with a production budget of $30 million, while it earned $44 million worldwide.
