At the 2014 Oscars, Lupita Nyong’o took home the Best Supporting Actress trophy. Naturally, when the news was announced, fellow nominee, Jennifer Lawrence put on a brave face. That is, up until she attempted to steal the Academy Award and ran into a Kenyan-Mexican actress backstage.

Lawrence, a Hollywood star and action hero, was laughing so hard that Nyong’o even joined in and tried to play along. For the unversed, The Hunger Games actress lost out on winning the best supporting actress Oscar in 2014 to the 12 Years a Slave actress.

Within seconds of finishing her emotional speech, Nyong’o raised her golden trophy in the press room of the Loews Hollywood Hotel in Hollywood.

Lawrence did not let anyone down, though. She made sure to get her awkwardness out of the way before attempting to snatch Nyong’o’s Oscar after she was defeated in the race. She was obviously joking, and the entire situation only makes us love her more.

She said this in reference to Patsey’s tale, the character she played, who was an enslaved woman in the movie adaptation of Solomon Northup’s autobiography (Twelve Years a Slave).

“It doesn’t escape me for one moment that so much joy in my life is thanks to someone else’s pain. No matter where you are from, your dreams are valid.”

Given that she is experienced with the horror subgenre, Nyong’o seems like the ideal choice for this spin-off.

Having joined the Marvel Cinematic Universe (MCU) in Black Panther and the Star Wars Universe in Star Wars: Episode VII – The Force Awakens, the Kenyan-Mexican actress is also no stranger to being a part of a major franchise. Her other projects include The Jungle Book, Queen of Katwe, and 12 Years a Slave.

A Quiet Place: Day One is slated to make its theatrical debut on March 8, 2024.
