Jim Carrey Felt Vulnerable When Filming The Truman Show

Jim Carrey revealed that for The Truman Show, he had to channel his own vulnerable side to play the character of Truman Burbank. This was quite a terrifying thing for him as he finds being charming and attractive on camera much easier than putting his true self and risking rejection. He added that getting rejected at that level can be much more painful and would feel much more personal.

“I can walk anywhere at any time and flip the switch and try to turn people on you know? That’s an easy natural thing for me to do. The not-so-natural thing for me to do is strip away s*x and show them a little bit of your true soul because on that level if you get rejected at that point, it’s much more hurtful, you know? It causes it a personal thing.” he added, “I’ve always believed that it’s not about what I say or what I do, it’s the intention behind it, and it’s the spark that people like.”

He was then asked if he had the tendency of taking everything this personally, to which he replied, saying that he believes that it does not matter what his actions are or what he says, what matters is the intention he has behind them and that is what audiences prefer seeing.

Jim Carrey Does Not Understand The Concept Of A Public Figure

Jim Carrey then went on to talk about how because he did The Truman Show, he has become quite uncomfortable around cameras and does not understand the concept of public figures. He elaborated by saying that during interviews, he consents to be on camera and knows what he signed up for, however, that is not the case when he is outside with his family and people start to take pictures of him

“Right now, I’m ready for it, you know? I’m not in the park with my daughter, you know?” he said, “I never got the concept of a public person. I don’t understand the concept because I never signed a paper. I never signed a waiver on my personal life. I do what I do, and that is the offer. That’s it.”

He then went on to say that he finds it extremely bizarre that people are allowed to invade his privacy just like that, without any legal documentation that allows them to. He added that instead of this, people should simply focus on what he allows to be out there, like his work, rather than trying to get a window into his personal life.
