Kimmel and Carolla, who became close friends through a radio show, initially met and connected, with Kimmel playing a significant role in launching Carolla’s career.
“They were doing these morning-shows stunts, you know, where Jimmy the Sports Guy fought Michael the Maintenance Man or whatever, and they needed trainers for and all the stuff you need for a boxing match. I just volunteered. I eventually made my way to the radio station, I waited in the hall, and at some point Jimmy just came out. I didn’t even know who he was. I trained him kind of randomly, and we just immediately hit it off.”

According to Carolla, Kimmel operates within the celebrity ecosystem, leading him to adopt certain viewpoints to maintain relationships with most celebrities.
“If you host a popular, late-night show in Hollywood you’ve gotta get guests. If you started talking about [Donald] Trump in a positive way and anti-vax this or that, it would be very injurious to your show.”
Hosting several shows including Win Ben Stein’s Money, The Man Show, Who Wants to Be a Millionaire, and Jimmy Kimmel Live!, Kimmel’s success relies on attracting guests. Carolla believes that expressing positive views about figures like Donald Trump or anti-vaccine sentiments could harm the show’s appeal.

“I’m not saying he’s doing it to get bookings… Hollywood leans in a direction, and if you’re gonna navigate Hollywood, and you’re really a part of it, your politics are gonna come out a certain way. It can’t be a coincidence that everyone’s on the same page for everything [in the industry] … It’s no different than anyone who lived in Manhattan and was educated.”
