Indiana Jones is one of the most iconic Hollywood franchises. The archeologist with his whip and fedora has been watched and celebrated by a generation of movie buffs and cinema lovers. The theme is still remembered and has immortalized the character in the minds of his fans. Lucasfilm Games, the creator of the Star Wars franchise, owns the Indiana Jones IP.
An Indiana Jones game was announced by Bethesda and Lucasfilm Games. The game is being developed by MachineGames, a studio known for its work on the Wolfenstein games. The games portray a fictional alternate future where the Axis powers won the Second World War. Recently, some conjecture has been surrounding the upcoming Indiana Jones title based on job listings, suggesting that MachineGames’ title will also have a multiplayer component.
Job Listing by MachineGames May Mean That the Upcoming Indiana Jones Game Will Allow PVP
As mentioned before, the most notable franchise that MachineGames has worked on is the Wolfenstein series. In the game, we play as B.J. Bazkowickz, an American covert operator who specializes in breaching enemy territory to accomplish missions against Nazi Germany.
If one were to glance at MachineGames’s portfolio, it consists of titles in the Wolfenstein series as well as the games in the Quake franchise. Only now does the studio seem to be honoring Doctor Jones’s legacy with a standalone game. While more than a dozen games have featured the titular character, all of them have been for the previous generation of consoles. The last game, Indiana Jones and the Staff of Kings, dates back to 2009.
Coming to the upcoming title by MachineGames, the job listing by the development studio is that of a network programmer, as mentioned on its official website. To access the description for the role, one can click on it; after that, it redirects to Zenimax, MachineGames’ parent company. The job description for the opening is as follows:
In this role your job is to tackle the game networking layer and we believe the person that will be best suited for this job is already experienced with real-time and low-latency object replication.
Furthermore, the skills required for the job also mention online matchmaking services, indicating that the profile is indeed for PvP mode. Like most job entries, the project is not revealed for obvious reasons. One might think it might be for the upcoming Indiana Jones game or the next entry in the Wolfenstein franchise. That is because both of these projects are confirmed to be in development by MachineGames.
It is worth mentioning that the studio hasn’t focused on multiplayer titles so far and has restricted its focus to single-player campaigns. It is unclear what a game featuring Indiana Jones will offer in terms of multiplayer; it is much easier to imagine a Wolfenstein game with an online component.
Also, if we see Indy not having a balance between the effort put into the single-player and multiplayer modes, it will most likely polarize players. That is because players are used to playing story games related to the character, not multiplayer.
The third and distant possibility could be that there is a third unannounced title by the development studio that is being worked on. Otherwise, the game could focus almost entirely on multiplayer and have a single-player campaign as a placeholder, just like the latest Call of Duty title.
Or it could be the other way around, continuing the trend set by MachineGames. At this point, any guess is plausible due to the lack of information on the subject. After Bethesda’s acquisition by Microsoft, the game could also be an Xbox Series X/S and PC exclusive.
If it is an exclusive, perhaps it would be aimed at Xbox’s contender against the iconic series Uncharted, which has been primarily exclusive to the PlayStation ever since its inception.
