Why is True Detective: Night Country Getting Flak Despite Positive Reviews?
Each season of True Detective has scored points for its choice of title track, including the second season that received flak. Season one featured The Handsome Family’s Far from Any Road, and season two kicked off with Leonard Cohen’s Nevermind from his 2014 album Popular Problems.
In season three, starring Mahershala Ali and Stephen Dorff, the opening music was Cassandra Wilson’s cover of Son House’s Death Letter. This set a high bar, and now, season four finds itself in a bit of a musical showdown.
True Detective fans had a moment of realization with Night Country – this time, the opening song is Billie Eilish’s Bury a Friend.
Fans aren’t disappointed with the song, but they’re wondering how it ended up in the series when it’s already been in countless films and TV shows. As one fan wrote (via Independent):
“Billie Eilish for the new True Detective intro song is…. a choice that was made…” with one more viewer wading in: “There’s like 10 needle drops in the new True Detective and they’re all so boring and colourless but worse than all of them combined is the title sequence song, which is the same Billie Eilish song they used in the Madame Web trailer.”
But a series can’t be judged solely based on its tunes. Being a crime drama, the focus should be on plot twists and suspense rather than nitpicking the tunes. There are other important aspects to consider when evaluating a series.
Will There Be a Season 5 of True Detective?
True Detective had the audience hooked for four seasons already. Now, the big question: Is it gearing up for a Season 5?
The second season of True Detective was a bit of a stumble, but the fourth season, did a little pivot. It refocused itself on female characters for the first time in the largely male-dominated crime genre.
Season 4 is a hit with critics, but the real deal is the viewership numbers, which will decide if there will be a Season 5. So, as of now, Season 5 is still a mystery and there’s no official confirmation yet.
