Sam Raimi’s Spider-Man 3 unfortunately had a bitter ending to the amazing trilogy. But the movie certainly did a phenomenal job at introducing Thomas Haden Church as the Sandman. Although the character didn’t get enough screen time, multiverse-shattering Spider-Man: No Way Home, came up with the opportunity to bring back villains from other realities.
This possibility opened up the opportunity to bring back the epic Spider-Man villain Sandman. And since Tom Holland’s MCU movies are doing well, there’s a chance for further sequels that might offer a deserving screen time to the iconic villain. Therefore, reaching out for the opportunity, John Cena was fan-cast as the perfect Spider-Man villain.

Sandman’s First Appearance in MCU
Marvel has been the home for several iconic heroes and villains over the years. But only a few of them made their way into the Marvel Cinematic Universe. And among those, not all of them got the screen time they deserved. This brings us to the iconic Spider-Man villain Sandman.
Making his first appearance in The Amazing Spider-Man #4 (September 1963), Sandman aka the prison convict Flint Marko, became one of the most iconic villains in the Spider-Man comics. Further, the character was given the opportunity to feature on the big screen in Sam Raimi‘s Spider-Man 3.
Played by Thomas Haden Church, the character was brought to life in the 2007 movie alongside Tobey Maguire. Sandman’s character rose to prominence as a villain after Flint Marko stumbled upon an experimental particle accelerator that bound his molecules with sand. But despite his iconic screen presence, the character wasn’t given enough screen time.
John Cena Fan Casted to Play Sandman
However, now, with Tom Holland’s Spider-Man films shattering the multiverse and giving the opportunity to bring villains from other realities into the MCU, it is believed that Sony might someday make a film featuring Sandman. The Peacemaker star John Cena appears to be one among the potential cast of Hollywood A-listers who are chosen by fans to play Sandman.
