With flawless cinematography, remarkably unforgettable action scenes, and a gripping plot that leaves an indelible imprint on you, John Wick: Chapter 4 is a cinematic feast. It’s next to impossible to pick any faults from the movie, besides the fact that it’s nearly three hours long, the only aspect of the action blockbuster that seems to have bothered the audience just a tad bit.

Chad Stahelski, however, had the perfect response to people lamenting about his film’s long duration.

In a new interview with Discussing Film, Chad Stahelski, who helmed John Wick: Chapter 4, addressed the subject of people whining over his film’s runtime, claiming how they seem to have no objections when they end up binge watching an entire season of a television show in one sitting.

“I have to stand up for my movie!” Stahelski remarked when the question of John Wick 4 being 2 hours and 49 minutes long came up. The credits alone constitute about 10-12 minutes of the runtime since they shot the Lionsgate film in five different countries.

While the latest addition to the John Wick franchise has only been rewarded with stellar reviews so far, there have been some who have grumbled about the movie’s duration, to which Stahelski, 54, had only one thing to say,

“These are the same people that will go and binge a whole season of television on a Sunday afternoon.”

“I think myself and again, you have [Christopher] Nolan and [James] Cameron, like come on, really? Everybody goes out and watches three seasons of TV on a Sunday, or they will watch whole five episodes of Game of Thrones at night. And because you’re on your couch that makes it different?”

He’s not wrong either. There have been plenty of films that have had a runtime of two, even three hours. James Cameron’s blockbuster sequel Avatar: The Way of Water went on for 3 hours and 12 minutes, whereas The Batman starring Robert Pattinson was stretched till 2 hours and 56 minutes. Even MCU’s Avengers: Endgame was as long as 3 hours. So, John Wick 4 wouldn’t be the first film to have a lengthy runtime.

John Wick Fans Back Chad Stahelski’s Argument

John Wick: Chapter 4 comes five years after the third installment, John Wick: Chapter 3 – Parabellum. The neo-noir action thriller stars Keanu Reeves, Donnie Yen, Bill Skarsgård, Rina Sawayma, Asia Kate Dillon, and Scott Adkins. And despite the movie’s prolonged runtime, the audience still loved every second of it. In fact, loyal fans of the multimillion-dollar franchise seem to be in full support of the argument that Stahelski put forth defending John Wick 4.
