John Wick 5 and All Upcoming Projects

The Continental

The Continental spinoff

John Wick Chapter 4 just destroyed and renovated the New York Continental hotel and reinstated Ian McShane’s Winston as its Manager. But unfortunately, it’d need a new Concierge in John Wick 5 as actor Lance Reddick and his character Charon are no more.

But anyway, the upcoming series called The Continental will also bring in a new Winston as the show is based on the early days of this hotel, and how it came to be. So, we’d see Colin Woodell and Ayomide Adegun play young Winston and Charon respectively.

According to Producer Erica Lee, the prequel series will explore what was the assassin’s life like before the hotel and show us how Winston got control of the hotel. There will be three 90-minute episodes which will arrive on Peacock in September 2023. Episodes 1 and 3 are said to have an enormous amount of action while the second will maintain the balance with more story.

Ballerina

Ana de Armas

The second spinoff in the Wick-Verse is a movie called Ballerina, which will introduce Ana de Armas as a female John Wick-esque character. She will play a female assassin called Rooney from John Wick’s Russian family who has been trained under the Ballerina program that was teased in Chapter 3. In fact, Parabellum also showed us the ballet dancer Unity Phelan playing a younger version of Rooney.

Ballerina’s story is confirmed to take place between Parabellum and Chapter 4 where she would hunt down her family’s murderers. The cast of the film would see the return of Anjelica Huston’s Director, Ian McShane’s Winston, and Lance Reddick’s Charon, who shot his scenes before his recent demise.

Keanu Reeves is said to make a cameo while there will be 3 newcomers including Gabriel Byrne, Norman Reedus, and Catalina Sandino Moreno. Ballerina doesn’t have a release date yet, but it could arrive sometime in 2024.

John Wick 5

Will John Wick 5 happen?

John Wick Chapter 4 killed off Wick right after he got his freedom from the High Table. This came as a big surprise because Lionsgate always wanted to do Chapter 5 as well. But now, Keanu Reeves claims that John Wick 5 is not guaranteed.

While speaking with Total Film, Reeves said:

You have to see how the audience responds to what we did. The only reason we’ve had a chance to make these movies is that people have liked what we have done. So I think we have to wait and see how the audience responds to it.

The audience and critics’ response as we know is highly positive, but John Wick 5 will highly depend upon the right story idea. Wick died, but his death could easily be faked and it will all depend upon director Chad Stahelski.

Chad Stahelski
Chad Stahelski

While speaking with The Hollywood Reporter, Stahelski said:

“In our minds, Keanu and I are done for the moment. We’re going to give John Wick a rest. I’m sure the studio has a plan. If everyone loves it and it goes kooky, then we’ll take a quiet minute.

Keanu and I will take the long trip to Tokyo, we’ll sit in the Imperial Hotel Scotch Bar and go, “What do you think?” We’ll have a couple 20-year-old whiskies and write some ideas on napkins. If those ideas stick, maybe we’ll make a movie.”

So, both Keanu and Stahelski will have to come up with a strong idea for the story. But the latter wants a break from the franchise as his next project is Paramount’s Rainbow Six starring Michael B. Jordan. And Keanu Reeves stated that he’d only be back for John Wick 5 if Stahelski returns. So, it’ll probably be a few years before the film arrives.

A Sofia Spinoff

Sofia in John Wick 3

Halle Berry’s Sofia Al-Azwar made her debut in Parabellum. She didn’t return in Chapter 4, but it is rumored that a project based on her character could be happening. In fact, Berry herself teased it in an interview with IGN where she said, “There could possibly be a Sofia…her own movie. So she might not be in John Wick, but she might be doing her own thingy-thingy.” It’ll be interesting to see what comes out of Sofia and the dogs and how their spinoff connects with John Wick 5.

Honorable Mentions – A Caine-based project

Akira vs. Caine

It is possible that there may be another spinoff in the works based on Donnie Yen’s Caine. He was free from all obligations to the High Table and was making a move to unite with his daughter Mia in Chapter 4’s end credits scene.

But his reunion was about to be interrupted by Akira (Rina Sawayama), whose father (Shimazu) died at the hands of Caine during Chapter 4. After killing Shimazu, Caine told Akira that he’d be waiting for her. And in the post-credits scene, Akira was seen walking towards him with a knife with the intent to get her revenge. So, this might be a setup for yet another spinoff. But it hasn’t been announced yet. However, it could be the project that leads us to John Wick 5.

A Nobody-John Wick Crossover

Nobody crosses over with John Wick

Derek Kolstad, the creator of both John Wick and Bob Odenkirk’s Nobody stated that he’d love to see a crossover between these two universes. The writer said that he loves the idea of shared universes and could see the likes of John Wick and Hutch Mansell taking down armies of assassins together. But it is a pipe dream for now. Whether it happens in John Wick 5 or before that remains to be seen.
