John Wick Universe Continues to Expand with Huge AAA Video Game Confirmed to be in Development

Featured Video

Ever since the first John Wick film back in 2014 fans have been crying out for a AAA video game based on the property, and for some unknown reason it has taken until now for one to be confirmed to be in development. Of course we currently have John Wick Hex to whet our appetites, but as good as that game may be, it’s not quite on the level of a multi-year developed AAA game for us to sink our teeth into.

John Wick – Film, TV Series and now a AAA Game?

For many reasons the John Wick universe lends itself incredibly well to a video game, whether it’s the balls-to-the-wall action of each instalment… well, that’s enough really. If further evidence was needed as to the IP’s capability as a video game property as well, look no further than the fantastic top-down segment of John Wick: Chapter Four, where we get to see John make his way through a house from above, as he lays waste to henchman after henchman with a very video-game-esque shotgun filled with fire rounds, a la any rogue-lite ever.

Thanks to the most recent Lionsgate earnings call, we now have direct confirmation that a AAA video game is in development.

“We’re now moving across that franchise, not just in the AAA video game space, but looking at what the regular cadence of spin-offs, television really growing that universe so that there is a steady cadence of a franchise that there’s clear appetite by the audience. What is official is that, as you know, Ballerina is the first spinoff that comes out next year. We’re in development on three others, including [John Wick 5] and including television series, The Continental, will be airing soon. And so, we’re building out the world and when that five movie comes, will be organic — will be organically grown out of how we’re starting to tell those stories. But you can rely on a regular cadence of John Wick.”

A passing comment is all we have at the moment, and as well as confirming the development of John Wick 5, we at least now know at some point we’ll be able to be directly involved in the John Wick universe for ourselves. It is yet to be seen if that would be as the titular character, one of the many featured characters from the established universe or someone completely new, but it is exciting news regardless.

Speaking in 2022, Lionsgate’s CEO Jon Feltheimer said the following regarding a then rumoured John Wick game.

“I don’t want to get ahead of myself here, but we believe there is a big AAA game to be made out of John Wick… We have been fielding proposals. We certainly are interested in moving that forward, but I don’t want to say anything more about that at this time.”

With what was previously said perhaps this announcement shouldn’t surprise anyone, but going forward it’d be a safe bet we’ll begin hearing more and more about this game and details will shine more light as to what we can expect.

Games of this ilk aren’t new, with IO Interactive’s famous Hitman series being a particular highlight, as well as the seemingly forgotten Splinter Cell franchise from Ubisoft. It can’t be argued though that with a John Wick game on the horizon, we’ll all be hoping we don’t have to lose a dog to become the next vengeful, blood-spilling assassin.
