When people walked out of the theatre after watching the first ever Iron Man movie, they were satisfied with what Jon Favreau had done. The 57-year-old actor and filmmaker had brought Iron Man to the big screen in an absolutely perfect way. And a major thanks went to the awesome fight scenes, great direction, and flawless CGI.
Being more than a savior to Iron Man, Jon Favreau gushed about the movie’s visual effects and fight scenes in MCU: The Reign of Marvel Studios. Speaking about the incredible visual effects teams, Favreau mentioned how he even replaced one fight scene in the first installment with CGI because visual effects looked better than reality.
Jon Favreau Replaced Reality With CGI in Iron Man
When Jon Favreau was given the responsibility to bring one of Marvel’s comic staples to the big screen, he and his team embraced it passionately and delivered the phenomenal movie, Iron Man. Coming up with mind-blowing visual effects, a stellar cast, and brilliant action sequences, Favreau surprised the audience with the distinct imagery.
But what shocked the audiences most was how Jon Favreau implemented advanced technology and graphics to not only save time but also to bring out authenticity. According to MCU: The Reign of Marvel Studios, Favreau initially used a real-life suit for Robert Downey Jr’s Iron Man. But eventually, during the fight scene in the fictional town of Gulmira, the director felt the physical Iron Man suit, “looked like a Power Ranger” in broad daylight.
Thus, in an attempt to bring out reality, Jon Favreau hired digital wizards and implemented CGI at its best. Replacing the real-life suit with CGI, the director mentioned how computer graphics offered him more flexibility with action sequences. But there was one mistake that neither he nor Kevin Feige wanted to commit.
Jon Favreau And Kevin Feige Refrained From Making One Mistake
While Jon Favreau implemented CGI to show action sequences and blew the minds of audiences, Kevin Feige was concerned about one thing. Even Favreau soon realized Feige’s concern and felt that the longer audiences spent watching a digitally rendered Iron Man, the more disconnected they might feel from the character.
“The depth of character is amazing in the comics, and a lot of people don’t realize that, including some of the people who used to be in charge of comic-book movies.”
Neither Jon Favreau nor Kevin Feige wanted to commit this mistake as they had seen and learned from too many comic book movies. Therefore, in an attempt to solve the issue of Robert Downey Jr’s face being covered in a mask, the filmmaker created a heads-on display for the character.
Shooting a close-up of Robert Downey Jr‘s face, Jon Favreau edited it properly to make it look like the actor had a camera inside the helmet of the suit. According to animation supervisor Marc Chu, this process “brings the human character onto it”. Thus, this process allowed Favreau to not only implement his CGI but also allow people to feel connected to Tony Stark.
