Christopher Nolan is one of the most esteemed directors in the film industry. The filmmaker has carved out a niche for himself, and with back-to-back hits, Nolan has amassed a loyal fanbase too.
The Batman Begins director has a level of genius that shines through his work and captivates his audience. Unsurprisingly, it is almost every actor’s dream to work with him. However, it is quite hard to get a hold of him, as his brother, Jonathan Nolan, revealed recently.
Jonathan Nolan reveals his brother Christopher Nolan’s weird habit
Talent runs in the Nolan household. Christopher Nolan has become one of the most influential directors of the present times. With films such as Interstellar and Dunkirk under his belt and, most recently, his Oscar-winning feature, Oppenheimer, Nolan has become the most sought-after filmmaker.
His brother, Jonathan Nolan, is not far behind either when it comes to having an incredible acumen for storytelling. Best known as the mind behind the HBO hit Westworld, the younger brother has always been the Tenet director’s biggest supporter.
The younger Nolan brother recently appeared in an episode of the Happy Sad Confused podcast with Joshua Horowitz. He spoke on a variety of subjects, and shed some light on an interesting trait of his older brother’s.
He recalled an incident from 2000 when they were working on Memento. He went on to narrate how hard it was for anyone to get hold of the older Nolan brother because he did not have a cell phone.
“Chris officially does not have a cellphone. It was always me and Emma were the saps who had to carry the cell phone around, you know. Whenever someone got word that you were close to Chris, your phone would start ringing with calls for him,” said Nolan.
Christopher Nolan might be an accomplished director, but he also has his quirks, as revealed by his brother. Fortunately, the talented filmaker has his younger brother to nudge him toward greater success.
Jonathan Nolan had to push his brother to work on The Dark Knight
The Oppenheimer director already delivered one of the best comic book films of all time: Batman Begins, starring Christian Bale. Following its massive success, he was apprehensive about working on a sequel, since he did not want to be working on comic book adaptations only.
Jonathan Nolan appeared on an episode of the Armchair Expert podcast with Dax Shepherd. He revealed that his brother was hesitant about the sequel, so he had to push him to work on the script.
“Chris was on the fence about making another one. He didn’t want to become a superhero movie director. We spent an hour telling the origin story, and that’s great, but it’s like, ‘what [more] can we do with this? So I was literally sitting with [producer] Charles Roven and Chris and being like, ‘Dude, don’t be a chicken sh*t. Let’s do this!’” he said.
The Dark Knight remains one of the best comic book films of all time, and Nolan took inspiration from classic thrillers. It became the first superhero film to gross over a $1 billion at the box office.
