The series’ anime is currently airing its second season and has reached the storyline known as the Shibuya Incident Arc. !! Spoiler Warning for Jujutsu Kaisen anime 2nd season, in particular, 32nd episode and beyond !!
Which rule did Jujutsu Kaisen break?
The rule that the anime of Jujutsu Kaisen broke is that of having no narration. Those who have read the manga would be surprised to see that the narrations have been removed and replaced either by dialogue/monologues spoken by characters or are absent entirely. This was done as per a request by Gege Akutami, and it worked, taking the anime to new heights.
However, despite the anime gaining a lot by removing narration, that rule seems to have been broken in the second season with the thirty-second episode overall. The episode shows the fight between Yuji and the grasshopper curse, with the same narration as seen in the manga, and this could well be a feature moving forward. While it may seem unusual or even unbelievable that the anime broke a rule set by the creator, there is actually a very good reason for doing so.
Why did Jujutsu Kaisen break that rule?
The reason for Jujutsu Kaisen breaking the narration rule in its anime adaptation is a simple one: it wouldn’t be possible to show the Shibuya Incident Arc without it, at least not in any good way. The arc has several instances of narration revealing information that no character could have known, examples being the revived Toji still being there and how the cursed technique of Haruta works. These are important bits of information, and couldn’t be rewritten into dialogues or monologues and they definitely couldn’t be removed.
Adding narration to the anime of Jujutsu Kaisen is another instance of how different it is, with there being a new director and character designer on board. This has been seen in terms of how certain episodes are different in their animation when compared to the first season.
