It has been known for a while that there have been numerous production problems with Jujutsu Kaisen Season 2, mostly due to MAPPA’s alleged extremely bad scheduling, which has pushed the animators to work excessive hours. The controversy started online, where the Jujutsu Kaisen Season 2 director and animators used social media to reveal the challenges they faced behind the scenes.
Recently, a second Jujutsu Kaisen animator has spoken out about working conditions at Studio MAPPA, which is now being accused of continuously delaying wage negotiations. A few hours later, he tweeted his disapproval of MAPPA, and it was removed. Fans reacted positively to the post, targeting MAPPA directly and wishing the animator the best of luck.
This accusation has been following a long line of other blames and controversies against MAPPA which has not only affected the workers deeply but also disappointed the fans as these alleged inhumane working conditions have led to the poor quality production of Jujutsu Kaisen.
MAPPA Stalls Negotiations Over Pay
Amidst the numerous charges levied against MAPPA, an animator has criticized the organization for allegedly persistently delaying wage negotiations. “When things get tough, I get flooded with work requests, but when it comes to money negotiations, it gets pushed back for more than a month,” the animator stated. That is the nature of MAPPA as a company. I’ve already had enough of remaining silent about it.” A few hours later, the tweet was deleted.
This animator reports a workload that is obviously above average and no indication that the increased workload is accompanied by pay, even though MAPPA recently raised animator pay in response to contentious changes to the Japanese tax code.
A number of the most well-known figures in the sector have also promised never to work for MAPPA ever again. These accusations are affecting MAPPA severely and are following one after the other, the recent being the alleged inhumane working conditions MAPPA is putting the animators in.
MAPPA Gets Accused of Inhumane Work Conditions
Many of MAPPA’s employees have expressed dissatisfaction despite the organization receiving positive reviews and being involved in well-known series like Jujutsu Kaisen, Chainsaw Man, and Attack on Titan. There have been alleged reports of a production crash, tense schedules, and last-minute episode completions, which point to a breakdown in the team due to the stressful circumstances.
The anime community has been shocked by these accusations against one of the biggest animation studios in the industry, which has led to fans questioning MAPPA Studios’ treatment of its employees and demanding better working conditions for the employees. Given how severe the most recent meltdown by the Jujutsu Kaisen animators was, fans are worried for the future of Jujutsu Kaisen.
MAPPA Studio has not addressed the concerns expressed about its alleged working conditions, despite the ongoing disputes and public outcry.
